Barny Hogs

Barny Hogs Barny Hogs Hedgehog Rescue was set up Liz Smith who attended the Vale wildlife course in april 2023

15/04/2026

After a long discussion Liz has decided that Barny Hogs will temporarily close its doors to all new admissions.

It hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but family life takes priority. We wish Liz well and she will obviously remain involved in the rescue as she is a trustee for The Littlest Wildlife Hotel.

For now please direct all calls to 07481801447 if we are unable to answer the call please leave a message or send a text/WhatsApp and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

For queries relating to bats we will now be undertaking these too and will be supported by other bat carers.

We could really do with any donations that you are able to make to us to help us care for the animals we have in our care and the animals that are going to come to us in the coming weeks and months.

For now please either use The Cedars as a drop off point or you can bring to the rescue.

If anyone would like to volunteer as either someone who is hands on at the rescue or a driver to collect animals we would very much appreciate it. Forms can be found on our website.

Thank you

Sun is out and so is the wildlife! Ones you should see at night!

Today a call about a baby hedgehog, as I was on a wood pigeon run, this one what is not a baby was found in the neighbours garden in croyde!

The quick thinking person put it in a box, knowing a hedgehog out in daylight needs help. Yes it was out sunbathing on the lawn.

It was boxed and on its way to Witten park lodge (Northam) medi vet, with the neighbours as there animal had an appointment, a call from the finder and I was on the phone to say should it be ok I will have it.

The vet has checked it over and said a little dehydrated, when I got it I have weighed it in and weighed in at 433g I have given it sub cut fluids and dry biscuits and water, of which she is munching on now.

This little lady is going to have a faecal sample when she decides she wants to go! And will see what internal parasites are going on and treat accordingly.

Please feel free to donate towards the wildlife we rescue and the food and vets bills for the treatment they all need.

Another messy little bat today, if only he could say what he’s been up too!
This one was found near instow, and was taken to the littlest wildlife hotel, of which I was going out there, to find Nikki saying I need your help!
This little boy is now with me and will be hand fed until he can start to eat by himself.
He was given rehydration fluids by myself, and was very thirsty.
Thank you to the finder for picking him up 🦇

With the weather turning a bit colder again across many parts of the UK, bats will become more sedentary but they will also be hungry. They will take every opportunity they can to emerge for an insect snack, occasionally during the day. While we wait for their proper return to the night skies... Why not start planning how to take part in the Sunset Survey this year. It's something you can do with friends and family, it's a great way to unwind at the end of the day too. If you haven't already, try the National Bat Monitoring Programme's Sunset Survey this year! https://www.bats.org.uk/our-work/national-bat-monitoring-programme/getting-started/sunset-survey

Todays call came via BCT of a pip that was found at Tawstock, it is last years juvenile and slightly starved, so will need to be hand fed, until it can feed it’s self, when it has put on weight it will then go into a flight pen, for flight testing and making sure it can do what a bat should do!
Please kindly donate towards looking after these beautiful bats, as they feed on live mealworms

Today’s little one is a longtailed tit, who was hit by a lorry and ended up on the next car and landed by the windscreen wipers, the lady drove really slowly with her passenger on the outside,
A volunteer of mine rang me to help, advice was given till I got there, it was then a call to charter vets saying I have a bird! Yes birds still not allowed in the building.
I went in and a member of staff came and got the longtailed tit and took it off to be checked by the vet, thanks Rita,
He will stay with me over night in a quite place and on a heat pad, and fingers crossed will be released tomorrow near where he was found.
Thank you to the finder for shouting for help.
Please remember we do have an Amazon wish list (yes animals are still with us) and you can donate on line

Today’s pipistrelle, call about this little one grounded in plastic, so as it was near the littlest wildlife hotel, I asked Nikki if she could collect him for me, as she was coming to mine so we could both go out and assist other wildlife. This one was carefully transported to me via Nikki, since being with me it’s on a heat pad to keep warm, I have given it oral fluids, tried a mealworm but it’s not interested …so will try again a little later with mealworms.
If you find an injured or grounded bat please call for advice, and we will take them into care.
Wildlife still have to be fed and watered and kept warm. Please kindly donate to the work that we do in helping towards food, medicines and the electric bills that mount up. You can donate on line and there is a Amazon wish list
Thank you from all the wildlife that you have helped to get back to the wild
