So firstly thank you to everyone who helped us reach our target for our new intakes vaccinations, neutering and microchips.
Unfortunately when the family of four arrived today. Mum Dad and their two 9 week old babies, there was clearly something very very wrong with one of the kittens. He could barely stand, toppled over, and the steps he tried to take were extremely exaggerated. He was a third of the size of his sister.
I phoned the vets immediately and they said I needed to take him straightaway.
I was that terrified he wouldn't make it, I held him the entire way so he wouldn't be alone.
He needed blood tests, a B12 injection, pain relief, a scan and a drip for fluids. It was almost impossible to get blood from him.
He had a glucose level of just 2, which is a critical medical emergency (severe hypoglycemia) requiring immediate veterinary attention. Such a low level poses a high risk of weakness, muscle tremors, hypothermia, collapse, and seizures in young animals. He was skin and bones and very malnourished.
After a glucose supplementation and supportive care he was allowed back to the rescue where he is on a very strict diet of small feeds every couple of hours.
We have everything crossed our little Maverick will pull through.
His bill stands at £725 for today's treatment. But hes alive and beautiful. Another day, possibly mere hours and I don't think he would have been so lucky as his tiny body was clearly collapsing.
So secondly Im afraid we are already asking for help again. This gentle little soul deserves the chance to fight, please help if you can.
