Why Slow and Steady Wins the Dog Training Race

In a world full of 30-second videos promising quick fixes, it can feel like dog training should happen overnight. But when it comes to true behaviour modification, the best and most lasting progress is made when we slow down.

Behaviour change isn't just about teaching a cue; it’s about changing how a dog feels about a trigger, environment, or routine. Emotional shifts take time, repetition, and a lot of patience.

Example: If you went to therapy for a fear of clowns, you wouldn't expect your therapist to lock you in a room full of them would you? Or that every time you expressed fear or uncertainty that they hit you or choked you for feeling that way?

No, you would expect gradual, slow progression and reassurance.

So why not give the same your best friend?

Here is why taking it slow works best:

1️⃣ Prevents Over-threshold Moments: Pushing a dog too far too fast leads to stress and setbacks. Going slow keeps them in a calm, trainable state of mind.

2️⃣ Creates Lasting Habits: Quick results are often temporary masks of behaviour. Slow progress creates solid, lifelong habits.

3️⃣ Protects Your Relationship: Working at a pace your dog can handle builds clear communication and mutual trust.

If you feel like progress is slow with your dog, remember: slow progress is still progress! Every small step forward is building a stronger foundation for the long run. ❤️

Is Now The Right Time for Dog Training?

When you invest in a dog training package, you aren't just buying an hour of a trainer's time, you’re committing to a transformation process for your dog!

Before booking onto a training program, here are 3 crucial things to ask yourself:

1) Have I checked my calendar against my dog trainer's terms?
Professional dog trainers run set business hours and package timeframes! Please, please check your schedules before you commit, discuss the best start date. If you sign up during a busy period in your calendar, don't blame the trainer.

2) Do I have 10-15 minutes a day to practice?
Training doesn't happen by magic during our 1-hour sessions. It happens in the small, daily reps between them! If life is currently chaos, you might want to wait until things settle down so you can get the most from your package.

3) Can I commit to a consistent routine?
Dogs love consistency and so do dog trainers. Check whether you can commit to a consistent routine to get your dog to where you both want them to be.

4) Ask questions!
During your package timeframe with me you have all the support you want. Please ask me as many questions as you want! Take advantage and extract information out of me!

Dog training is a team effort. When you're ready, we are ready to guide you every step of the way! 💪🐶

UK Animal Welfare Update: Training Tools

You may have seen recent discussion around Defra’s latest animal welfare announcements. As part of its wider animal welfare strategy, the UK Government has reiterated its position on the use of aversive training tools, particularly remote-controlled electric shock collars for dogs and cats.
To clarify the current position:

• The Government has confirmed its intention to prohibit the use of hand-held, remote-controlled electric shock collars, on welfare grounds.

• This position is based on evidence relating to pain, distress, misuse risk, and the availability of effective non-aversive alternatives.

• Devices that use sound or vibration only are not included in the proposed prohibition.

• Other tools (such as slip leads, prong collars, or spray collars) are not currently banned, but continue to sit under welfare scrutiny and professional standards.

Importantly, the regulatory direction is shifting away from focusing solely on equipment and towards welfare outcomes, professional accountability, and evidence-based practice. This means that how and why a tool is used — and the impact on the animal — matters more than ever.

For trainers and behaviourists this reinforces the need to:

• Work within evidence-led, welfare-centred frameworks
• Align practice with current professional standards and codes of conduct
• Ensure guidance given to clients and learners remains ethical, proportionate, and defensible

Professional, ethical practice protects animals, practitioners, and the public.

🌞 I KNOW ITS HOT BUT I HAVE TO WALK MY DOG! 🌞

No, no you don't.

Recently, I went to see Barney. He'd been booked in for one of his faves... a walk.

But it was too hot. 🥵

So we trained.

Reinforced old skills, practiced some semi-started skills and even introduced new ones.

Before this Barney had a Lickimat too. All this fun, all in less than 20 minutes.

Of course there were cuddles too.

Barney was happy, entertained and didn't care that a walk hadn't happened.

So no, you don't need to walk your dog in the heat.

Try something new, something fun, something that will put a smile on your face.

PS. It also doesn't have to be complicated either.
