Why Nail Length Matters:
A Real-Life Example
One of the most overlooked aspects of canine health is nail care. A dog’s nails should be kept at a length that allows the paw pads—not the nails—to make proper contact with the ground. When nails become too long, they can change the way a dog stands and walks, leading to abnormal weight distribution and strain throughout the body.
The photo below shows a dog with overgrown nails that have contributed to the foot twisting outward. This altered foot position can place excessive stress on the toes, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and spine, potentially leading to pain, reduced mobility, and long-term musculoskeletal problems.

Regular nail trims are not just about appearance—they are an important part of preventative healthcare. Maintaining healthy nail length helps support proper posture, normal gait, joint health, and overall comfort.
If your dog’s nails are touching the ground when standing, clicking loudly on hard floors, or causing the toes to spread or twist, it may be time to review their nail care routine with a veterinarian or qualified groomer.
Healthy paws start with healthy nails. A few minutes of regular maintenance can help prevent months or even years of discomfort. 🐾
