🐾 Billy’s Training Journey – 121 Course 🐾

Billy is a gorgeous Golden Retriever cross who has been working through our 121 training course with Julie & Paul, and it’s been fantastic to see the progress he’s made 💛

When Billy first came to us, his main challenge was reacting to dogs approaching him on the Trans Pennine Trail. He would bark and lunge, particularly after an unpleasant encounter with another dog, and this understandably made walks stressful for his owners.

Billy is naturally a very laid-back boy, so our training has focused not only on helping him manage distractions, but also on making sure Julie & Paul have clear communication with him and understand exactly how to help him in different situations.

There is still plenty to practise, but Billy has come a long way from the dog who would react to almost anything passing him on the TPT. 💪🐾

Well done Julie & Paul for putting the work in and continuing to build Billy’s confidence and understanding. ❤️

We’re looking forward to seeing how Billy continues to progress! 🐶

🐾 DEXTER – PUPPY VISIT 🐾

When we arrived, Dexter had free run of the house and greeted me at the door like the typical bouncy puppy he is! 😄

The main struggles for Wayne and Angela were leaving Dexter alone, his attention-seeking, biting, settling and understanding boundaries.

One of the first things we identified was how easy it is to accidentally reinforce behaviour without realising it.

We worked on teaching Dexter that calm behaviour gets attention.

Wayne and Angela had stopped using Dexter’s crate because they were worried his whining and barking meant he was extremely stressed. Because his vocalising had previously resulted in attention or being released, he has learned that it can work.

The goal is to gradually teach Dexter that being alone is normal and that he can settle without needing constant reassurance.

Restricting his freedom while he is learning isn’t cruel. It prevents him practising behaviours such as stealing and chewing things when left loose and gives him the opportunity to learn.

He isn’t being “naughty” because he doesn’t understand the rules yet — he’s learning which behaviours get him what he wants.

Our job is to make those rules clear and consistent.

A really important part of behaviour work is helping owners recognise what they’re accidentally reinforcing. Sometimes the smallest changes can make a huge difference.

Now it’s about consistency, patience and giving Dexter the opportunity to learn.

We look forward to seeing how Dexter progresses! 🐾❤️

🐾 ROXIE – WORKING PATTERDALE BEHAVIOUR CASE 🐾

Initial Assessment

When we first assessed Roxie, she was just 6 months old and already showing very high levels of arousal, frustration and impulsive behaviour.

She had recently latched onto another dog while out, and at home she struggled to listen, settle or regulate herself. On walks she was pulling, jumping, lunging and generally operating at a very high level of arousal — even when there were no other dogs around.

🏡 Behaviour visit

During the home visit, we focused on structure, boundaries, fulfilment and calmness.

They were both happy to lie down and relax once they were given clear boundaries. This showed us that Roxie can switch off — she just needs to learn how.

We worked on:

🐾 Managing access to the sofa and attention
🎾 Individual play without competition
🐀 Breed-specific fulfilment through appropriate activities
🚪 Calm arrivals and visitors
🏠 Building independence
👃 Sniffing and decompression
😴 Encouraging proper rest and sleep
🐕 Improving calmness and communication on walks

She is already highly aroused before another dog even appears. The lunging, pulling and jumping are happening throughout the walk, and another dog simply adds vocalisation and frustration to an already elevated state.

We want to embrace Roxie’s working-dog genetics rather than fight against them, while teaching her that there are also times when she needs to switch off and relax.

Now it’s about consistency, structure and giving her the right outlets so she can learn to regulate herself.

This is a young dog with plenty of time to learn, and we’ve now got some really important foundations in place. 🐾

Nell’s Training Journey 🐾

It’s been fantastic to see how far Nell and her owners have come over the course of their four 1:1 sessions.

When Nell first came to us, her main issue was reactivity towards other dogs, particularly larger dogs. Her owners were understandably worried about managing her around dogs and lacked confidence in knowing what to do when she reacted.

For our final session, I brought Ragnar along so that we could work on having Nell around another dog at close proximity. The aim wasn’t for them to interact or play, but to help Nell’s owners practise managing her around another dog and, more importantly, build their confidence in their own ability to control and guide her.

She is a friendly dog who naturally wants to interact and play with other dogs, but she hadn’t previously learnt how to do that appropriately. Her owners also didn’t feel comfortable letting her off lead because of the risk of her running off.

A dog doesn’t need to play with other dogs to be happy and fulfilled.

If Nell’s breed-specific needs, enrichment, engagement and interaction are being fulfilled by her owners, there isn’t necessarily a need for her to interact with other dogs at all.

This helped Nell’s owners understand that they don’t need to feel pressured into allowing her to play with other dogs. They can instead focus on building a strong relationship with her and teaching her that being around dogs calmly is enough.

By the end of the session, they felt much more confident and could see that Nell isn’t showing aggression towards other dogs. They now have a much better understanding of how to manage her, communicate with her and, importantly, how to give her everything she needs without relying on interaction with other dogs.

From where they started to where they are now, the difference in both Nell and her owners’ confidence has been brilliant to see. 👏

A brilliant four sessions with Nell and her family — well done! 🐶❤️

🐾 BRUNO’S BEHAVIOUR JOURNEY 🐾
From barking and lunging to learning how to cope

Meet Bruno, a nearly 2-year-old standard Dachshund whose family became increasingly concerned about his behaviour at home and on walks.

They initially booked an Assessment so we could understand what was happening, when Bruno reacted and what might be contributing to his behaviour.

During the assessment, Bruno showed us that he wasn’t simply an aggressive or unfriendly dog.

This helped us understand that his behaviour was linked to frustration, impulse control, arousal and inconsistent boundaries, rather than simply disliking people or dogs.

Following the assessment, Bruno’s family booked a Behaviour Visit so we could work through these issues in greater depth.

With clear guidance and boundaries, Bruno can relax. He just needs to learn how.

We also identified an important piece of body language when Bruno had a bone. He displayed whale eye, giving his family the opportunity to learn how to recognise when he was uncomfortable and how to respect his space around high-value items.

For walks, we focused on changing the pattern from:

Dog/person appears → tension → barking/lunging → high arousal

to:

Dog/person appears → handler stays calm → alternative response

🐾 The goal isn’t simply to stop the barking.

It’s to help Bruno learn how to:

● Cope with frustration
● Manage his emotion
● Understand boundaries
● Make better choices

Bruno is a lovely example of why it’s so important to look beyond the behaviour itself.

A dog that barks and lunges doesn’t necessarily hate people or dogs.

Sometimes, we need to understand what the behaviour is communicating and which skills the dog is missing.

That’s where behaviour support can make such a difference. ❤️

🐾 PUPPY VISIT – MEET TEDDY! 🐾

We recently met Teddy, a gorgeous 9-week-old Fox Red Labrador, and what a lovely little character he is! ❤️

Teddy is a little nervous around new people, so one of our biggest focuses was helping him build confidence while teaching him that his boundaries will always be respected.

We don’t want puppies to feel that people can simply reach out and touch them whenever they want. Instead, Teddy is learning that he can choose whether he wants to approach and interact — helping him build confidence and reducing the risk of defensive behaviours developing as he gets older.

We also worked on:

🐾 Crate training & learning to settle
🐾 Teaching calmness and independence
🐾 Managing puppy biting and attention-seeking
🐾 Boundaries, structure & routine
🐾 Attention to name & engagement
🐾 Confidence-building exercises
🐾 Helping Teddy learn that he doesn’t need constant attention

At just 9 weeks old, sleep and learning to switch off are incredibly important. Puppies need a huge amount of sleep, so teaching Teddy that it’s okay to do nothing and settle is just as important as teaching sit, down and recall.
Teddy’s owner that they really are doing a good job! 🥰

There is so much conflicting puppy advice online that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and worry that you’re getting everything wrong.

You don’t need a perfect puppy overnight. You need clear boundaries, consistency, patience and positive experiences.

Teddy has already made a great start, and we’re looking forward to seeing him continue to grow in confidence when he joins our puppy classes! 🐶❤️
