The risk of Brucella Canis infecting a member of my profession is low, but it should always be taken seriously. As this article published recently at a human infectious diseases conference shows.

This vet was extremely poorly with serious symptoms caused by Brucella Canis but, most importantly, had had no high-risk exposure to known positive dogs, beyond those who were patients she looked after.

This is why it is so important that imported dogs are tested, and confirmed negative, before they enter the UK. This is now mandatory for those travelling from Romania but a responsible importing organisation will do this for dogs from other high-risk countries as well.

It is also why a repeated test must be performed after the dog has been in the UK for three months, to ensure any who may have been developing the infection during the first testing period, are identified.

A positive result doesn't mean your local clinic won't care for your dog, but it does mean they know to put extra precautions in place to keep their staff safe.

To my colleague, (who, I must be clear, I do not know but we are all peers in this profession) I sincerely hope you are doing better now and I am very sorry this happened to you.

Many of you will have met Eloise (left). She has been with us since January on a nursing placement.
Over the last few months she has been developing her nursing skills with the help of our head nurse Katie and sadly today is her final day of her placement before she returns back to university to complete her final exams and OSCE’s.
We wish her all the best and will be sure to use her bandage art (that you may have seen on a previous post) on all of our patients🥰

Look at this handsome boy Dennis waiting for his dental procedure! ✨

We give all our patients prior to any procedure a mixture of drugs called a pre-medication which is a mixture of calming and pre-operative pain relief 😎

Look at how relaxed he looks as you can see this start to kick in the second photo😴

🚨‼️Changes in the pet travel scheme‼️🚨

As of today (22nd April 2026) new EU rules will apply to the non-commercial movement of dogs, cats and ferrets entering the EU from third countries such as Great Britain (GB).
An EU pet passport, issued to or held by a pet owner who is resident in GB will no longer be a valid document for travelling with pets from GB to the EU.
This applies to EU pet passports issued in an EU Member State or Northern Ireland, including those issued before 22 April 2026. EU pet passports may only be issued to owners whose main residence is within the European Union.
GB residents travelling to the EU with a pet dog, cat or ferret will need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for travel from 22 April 2026.

Please be aware this change has been made by the government and we expect there to be extra questioning at the border.

If any of our clients are affected and need to book in an AHC, please contact our clinic with as much notice as possible and we can do our best in arranging the appropriate documentation for your travel.

🐾🍔 Are you ever guilty of sneaking your dog extra snacks or leftovers?

What may seem like just a little treat can add up when it comes to your dog’s daily calories. Some foods are unsuitable regardless of calories, as they’re high in fat or contain lactose - which dogs can’t tolerate. Swipe to see how everyday foods and snacks stack up in your pet’s diet.

*Based on a 20kg dog with a calorie allowance of 900 calories per day
**Based on an adult male with a calorie allowance of 2500 calories per day
