Fireworks season is coming - and it's never too early to start preparing! 🎆

Gradually introducing your pet to firework sounds at a low volume, alongside treats and positive experiences, can help them feel more comfortable when the real thing begins.

If you're concerned about your pet, get in touch with us for advice and support ahead of firework season. 💙

⚠ Warning - picture of surgery ⚠
Every day is different when you work in a vets and the lovely Ruby here is a great example of why!

Ruby unfortunately developed a pyometra earlier this year, which is an infection in the uterus. Pyometra can cause sepsis, organ failure and ultimately can be fatal if left untreated 😢

Roughly 1 in 4 unspayed dogs will develop a pyometra, making this a very common issue we deal with. Surgical treatment is still the best option for patients suffering with pyometra, and Ruby was spayed to remove her ovaries and infected uterus.

However, we made a surprise discovery during this surgery (see pics) - a change to the bladder which is suspected to be a urachal diverticulum.

A urachal diverticulum is a congenital condition - it is a little ‘pouch’ connected to the bladder. It forms when something called the ‘urachus’ does not fully close at birth. This is much less common than a pyometra! 😱

Given that Ruby had no history of any urinary issues at the time of her surgery, we discussed the findings with a local specialist and ultimately her bladder was left as it was found 🔍

We are very pleased to say that she made a full recovery from her surgery 🫶🏻
