🐴🐴 Brand Ambassador Update - Megan Murphy 🐴🐴

Megan and Dennis have finally managed to kick start their Summer - here's an update:

Dennis and I unfortunately haven't been up to much due to him sadly tweaking his leg and having 2 months out of work to make sure he was back on top form.

Since coming back, he's been an absolute star. We've been doing lots of lateral and pole work to help re-strengthen him and hopefully get ready for a strong winter season jumping!

He's been great out at pole clinics and last weekend we went back out jumping for the first time in about 4 months - winning the novice! And for a freshly turned 7yo Dennis has also been an absolute angel babysitting a young boy at my yard for a couple of rides.

I'm hoping to be able to get him out a bit more now that he's in tip-top shape and carry on with some good results - we'll keep you posted.

⭐⭐ Alpha-2 macroglobulin (A*M) ⭐⭐

A*M is an orthobiologic preparation which can be used as an alternative to steroids in joints and other synovial structures. It is a protease inhibitor which decreases inflammation within the joint, causing the horse to become more comfortable. It is typically made from a sample of your horse's blood, although there is now an allogenic preparation available, meaning that your horse does not have to go through the blood collection process.

A*M can be frozen, and defrosted and used within 12 months, so horses can have multiple doses from one processing which can be used as required. Some clinicians give more than one dose, depending on the horse's requirements. There is also no competition withdrawal.

Systemic and Nutritional Factors in Joint Integrity

🐴🐴 Brand Ambassador Update - Molly Perkins 🐴🐴

Here's a lovely update from Molly on how they got on at Trailblazers:

Two weeks ago Arte and I headed to Addington for the Trailblazers Championships. We completed 3 tests over 3 days, and managed to place on every day. We came 5th on the first day, 9th on the second day and finished the week on a high placing 2nd on the last day!

We had a wonderful time and loved representing Avonvale, wearing our kit for the duration. We also got to do mounted prize givings every day because we placed in the top 10. We loved every minute and will definitely aim to be back next year.

I also have another exciting update, that the day after we got home from Trailblazers we welcomed a new arrival Fitz home. We are just getting to know each other but with his background in dressage and recent introduction to eventing, I have really high hopes for him. He is already proving to be a really nice chap and I look forward to bringing you some updates on him too in the coming months.

⭐⭐ Recognizing pain in donkeys ⭐⭐

Donkeys are stoic animals and it can be challenging to recognize signs of pain compared to a horse. In the wild donkeys will live in small herds- if they are sick the herd will often reject them and they will be vulnerable to predators- therefore it is the donkeys instinct to hide signs of illness in order to survive. It is our job to know the subtle signs to look for so we can treat a donkeys illness quickly- once we start seeing obvious signs of discomfort the disease process is often very advanced and challenging to treat. Here are some signs of pain to look for:

- Less interaction with the herd- is he stood away from his friends?
- Weight shifting or stretching out the limbs or pawing the floor
- Tucked up abdomen
- Laying down more than normal
- Holding his head lower than his withers- looking dull
- Ears lying flat out to the sides- like motorbike handles
- Tail flicking or tail tucked in
- Looking at the abdomen +/- lifting hind legs
- Teeth grinding or moaning
- Eating less/ not interested in food
- Reluctance to move (beyond what is normal for that particular donkey)
- Increase respiratory/ heart rate
- No reaction when you try to get his attention- ignoring your presence where he would normally come to interact with you.
- Inappropriate sweating
- Excessively open eyes or tightening of the eyelids
- Nostril flaring
- Corners of the mouth lifted
- Head shaking/exaggerated head movement

Remember: A DULL DONKEY IS AN EMERGANCY

Junior Brand Ambassador Aaliyah Fletcher continues to have fun at the Pony Club Championships at Offchurch.

On Monday she took little Roxy, jumping clear getting into jump off. Then Tuesday and Wednesday she took Ruby and jumped two lovely rounds.

Thankfully the weather has cooled. If you are there, make sure to say hello to our lovely vets who are on duty all week.

🐴🐴 Junior Brand Ambassador - Aaliyah Fletcher 🐴🐴

Aaliyah has been keeping busy this summer, proudly flying the flag for Avonvale as one of our Junior Brand Ambassadors, even wearing her coat on holiday whilst seal watching in Anglesey!

She and Mum Lauren bumped into Vet Carys on Friday, who was busy working at the Pony Club Championships. Thankfully it's cooled down this week so should be a bit more comfortable for our busy vets and the competitors.
