❤️ The end of an era – Shanaghan Matilda (2006–2026)

Today we said a very difficult goodbye to our beautiful Shanaghan Matilda, aged 20.

Born and bred here at Shanaghan, Matilda spent her entire life with us. She was a very special mare, and one who taught us so much over the years.

Kind, loyal, faithful and endlessly patient, Matilda had the most wonderful nature. She was a devoted mother who adored her foals, raising many over the years with the same gentleness and patience that made her so special to us.

Some horses leave their mark through their achievements, but others leave something far greater through their character and the lessons they teach us. Matilda did both.

She was part of the fabric of Shanaghan, and it is difficult to imagine the fields without her.

Twenty years of memories, generations of foals and a lifetime of quiet companionship. We were incredibly fortunate to have her.

Rest easy, our beautiful Matilda. Thank you for everything. ❤️

Forever part of Shanaghan Hill Farm.

Two years apart, and a milestone that means even more with hindsight.

In 2024, Shanaghan Ricochet was crowned Youngstock Hunter Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

This week, he returned to the same show and won the Novice Lightweight Hunter, before going on to take the Novice Hunter Championship.

For us as breeders, this is especially rewarding. Youngstock success gives a glimpse of potential, but seeing that potential develop into a mature performance horse is something quite different. It reflects not only breeding decisions made years ago, but also the patience, care and skilled production required at every stage.

Bred at Shanaghan Hill Farm, Ricochet is by Lagan’s OBOS Quality out of our homebred mare Shanaghan Charlotte.

We are very grateful to his owner Jill Day, producer Robert Walker, and everyone involved in his journey including Ann Drabble who bought him as a foal. Their work has allowed him to develop into the horse we hoped he might become.

From Youngstock Hunter Champion to Novice Hunter Champion at the same showground — a very special chapter in his story.

Another fantastic result at the Great Yorkshire Show! 🌟

Shanaghan Maestro, a 3-year-old gelding by Centre Stage out of Shanaghan Charlotte, finished 3rd in a very strong 3-Year-Old Hunter class.

Owned by Ann Drabble and beautifully shown by Tom Moore, Maestro was a little green at times, which is only to be expected for a young horse at this stage of his career. He gained invaluable experience and showed plenty of quality and potential for the future.

We’re incredibly proud to see another horse from the Shanaghan Charlotte family performing so well at one of the UK’s most prestigious shows.

Congratulations to Ann, Tom and everyone involved. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Maestro. 💙

Great Yorkshire Show Champion! 🏆

Huge congratulations to owner Jill Day, producer Robert Walker, and everyone involved as Shanaghan Ricochet was crowned Novice Hunter Champion today at the Great Yorkshire Show, following his victory in the Novice Lightweight Hunter class this morning.

Bred by us at Shanaghan Hill Farm, Shanaghan Ricochet (“Chips”) is by Lagan’s OBOS Quality and out of our homebred mare Shanaghan Charlotte (Clerkenwell × Tully’s Eagles Wings).

It is incredibly rewarding to see another horse from this exceptional dam line achieving success at one of the UK’s most prestigious agricultural and equestrian events. Congratulations to Jill, Robert and the entire team on a fantastic result—we couldn’t be prouder.

A very special day for the Shanaghan Horses.

We were honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to meet our Irish Draught and Irish Sport Horses during the British Horse Society Ireland Equine Futures Day.

The Princess Royal spent time learning about our breeding programme and showed particular interest in the important role the Irish Draught continues to play in producing quality sport horses while preserving one of Ireland's most treasured native breeds.

Every horse we breed is produced with welfare, temperament, athleticism and longevity in mind, and it was a privilege to share that journey.

Seeing our horses represent everything we have worked towards over many years made this an incredibly proud occasion for everyone involved.

Thank you to The British Horse Society Ireland for choosing Shanaghan as the venue for such an important event and to everyone who joined us on the day.

Moments like these remind us why preserving and promoting the Irish horse is so important.

Five from Five! 🏆

What a season it has been for Shanaghan Ricochet (“Chips”).

Just a few days after being crowned Champion Hunter at the Three Counties Show, Chips headed to the Royal Cheshire County Show, where he added another major title by winning the Novice Hunter. That makes an incredible five wins from five outings this season as he continues to mature and learn his job.

Bred here at Shanaghan Horses, Chips is by Lagan’s OBOS Quality and second foal out of our homebred mare Shanaghan Charlotte (Clerkenwell X Tullys Eagles Wings)

His pedigree is one we are immensely proud of:

⭐ Full brother to Shanaghan Velvet last years HOYS Hunter of the Year
⭐ Out of the same dam Shanaghan Maestro (3 yr old sired by Centre Stage and owned by Ann Drabble)

It is always especially rewarding to see generations of our breeding programme producing horses capable of performing and winning at this level.

Congratulations to his owner Jill Day and team Walker on producing Chips’. We are excited to watch his journey continue as he develops into the horse we always believed he could become.

Well done, Chips! Here’s to the next challenge. 💙🐴
