HORSE AND MILK CART END UP IN NEWRY CANAL

​Passersby at Canal Quay near Clanrye (Sands) Mills in Newry were treated to an unusual sight around 9.00am on Wednesday, September 6, 1916, a horse and milk cart floating in the middle of the canal.

​The horse belonged to Abel Henning of Tinker Hill Dairy and was being driven on its morning delivery route by a man named Trainor.

​While passing the mill, the horse spooked, likely startled by a sudden burst of steam or an engine revving up. Before anyone could stop it, the animal backed itself, the cart, and the entire milk shipment straight into the water.

​Trainor quickly got to work. With the help of George Hughes from Canal Street, Robert McCullough, and a soldier from the Royal Irish Ri**es stationed at the local barracks, the group managed to haul both the horse and cart back onto dry land after a frantic few minutes.

​Once back on solid ground, Trainor called it a day and cancelled the rest of his deliveries, leaving a number of local customers without milk for their morning breakfast.
