🎓🐾 A HUGE WELL DONE TO OUR YOUNG PAWS ACADEMY GRADUATES! 🐾🎓

What an absolute joy it’s been getting to know these six wonderful dogs and their humans over the past six weeks! 💚

We’ve loved seeing each dog’s personality shine through, those little lightbulb moments when something clicks, and the growing confidence and connection between dogs and their humans. 🥰

Together, we’ve explored some all-important training foundations:

🐾 Canine body language and stress signals

🐾 Relaxation and everyday training skills

🐾 Confidence with vet visits and handling

🐾 Brain games and enrichment

🐾 Understanding how individual dogs learn

💚 Because great training isn’t just about teaching our dogs what to do – it’s about learning to understand them, too!

A huge thank you to all six teams for your enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to learn. It’s been a real pleasure being part of your journey!

Graduation might mark the end of our six weeks together, but it’s just the beginning of everything you and your dogs can achieve! 🐾🧡

🩵 Scent Detection Skills Workshop 🩵

What a brilliant session with our advanced sniffers today!

We challenged our teams with inaccessible hides, some rather sneaky hide placements that had the humans scratching their heads 🤔, transitions between search areas and the challenge of working through large blank areas.

But one of my favourite parts was watching the dogs search inside a car! 🚗

It was fascinating to see how differently each dog communicated that they’d located the target odour.

Different dogs, different indications — but all passive and non-invasive! 🙌

Of course, the humans had plenty of problem-solving to do as well! 😂

Fantastic teamwork, some lovely independent searching and lots of learning for both ends of the lead.

Well done, everyone! 🐕👏

WE’RE BACK! 🐾🧡

After a few glorious days by the sea, we’re back home, refreshed and ready to get stuck back into training!

The dogs had the BEST time — beach walks, sea swims, zoomies in the sand and plenty of Cornish adventures 🌊🐕☀️

I’ll be catching up with messages and emails over the next couple of days, and then it’s back to the barn, the farm and all our lovely dogs and humans.

Although judging by this video , I think the dogs might have preferred us to stay in Cornwall… 😂🌊

🎉 WHAT A WAY TO KICK OFF OUR FUNDRAISING! 🐾💜

Our first fundraiser for Hannah, who is taking on the London Marathon 2027 as a blind runner in aid of VICTA UK , was a HUGE success!

🐾 Dogs sniffed their way around the farm
⏱️ Each team had 26.2 minutes to tackle four search areas
🤝 Strategy and teamwork were essential
😂 And there was plenty of fun and friendly competition along the way!

By the end, we had some very tired dogs who were more than ready to put their paws up.

But Hannah? We had one final surprise up our sleeves! 👀😂

The dogs and handlers had completed their challenge, so it was only fair that Hannah got one of her own…

🚗 A DRIVING CHALLENGE! 🚗

A completely different kind of challenge — and Hannah was absolutely up for giving it a go! There were plenty of laughs, a few tense moments and lots of encouragement from the sidelines. 😂👏

It was the perfect ending to a brilliant afternoon full of sniffing, teamwork, laughter and fundraising.

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who came along, joined in and supported Hannah and VICTA. 💜

There’s a little hunting dog starting to emerge… and with Henry, it needs bringing out gently. ❤️🐾

Hunting is still very new to him. He has the instinct and enthusiasm, but he’s also a sensitive little dog who needs time to work things out and confidence to make his own choices. Pressure or sharp commands can easily make him worry and switch off — patience, kindness and encouragement bring out a completely different Henry.

And that’s exactly what we’re seeing. Little by little, he’s becoming braver, more confident and more willing to get stuck in. Watching that happen is pretty special.

We’re currently doing a short Spaniel Gundog course with Tracy from Corbinsbere Gundogs, working on hunting, stop whistle, sit to flush, retrieving over obstacles, steadiness in the pheasant pen and, most importantly, learning how to work together as a team.

This is why we happily do a 4-hour round trip every week… and it’s completely worth it!

Tracy is genuinely one of the best trainers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. The opportunity to train on such fantastic and varied ground is invaluable, but what I appreciate most is her ability to really see the individual dog in front of her — knowing when to encourage, when to adapt and when to simply give a dog a little more time.

Henry is gaining confidence, developing his skills and having an absolute blast along the way. And I’m learning loads too — which is exactly how it should be! ❤️

Very grateful for these training days… even with all those miles on the car! 😂🐾

No previous experience is needed and scent detection is suitable for dogs of all ages and breeds — including dog-reactive dogs.

Dogs work individually, so they don’t need to be comfortable working alongside other dogs. This makes scent work a great option for dogs who might find a traditional group class environment difficult.

🐾 Happy International Dog Day 2026! 🐾

It probably won’t come as a surprise that this is a day I’m very happy to celebrate! ❤️🐶

I feel incredibly lucky that dogs are such a huge part of both my work and my life.

As a dog (and people! 😉) trainer, I get to help dogs and their humans understand one another better, learn new skills, build confidence and, most importantly, enjoy doing things together.

Through our animal-assisted learning sessions at Penthwell Farm, I also get to see dogs work their magic in a completely different way — helping children feel safe, build confidence, communicate, problem-solve and connect. Sometimes the things a dog can teach simply by being a dog are pretty remarkable. 🥰

And then, of course, there are my own dogs. ❤️

Training partners, working dogs, farm companions, adventure buddies, hot-water bottles, professional snack detectors and very much part of our family.

Dogs give us so much — but they also rely on us to understand them, advocate for them and give them the opportunity to live lives that meet their needs too.

So today is definitely one worth celebrating.
