As temperatures drop, don’t forget about your calves ❄️🐮

Colder weather can put extra pressure on young calves, so a little extra care can go a long way in keeping them healthy and thriving.

🐮 Ensure plenty of clean, dry bedding
🧥 Consider calf jackets when appropriate
🍼 Maintain adequate milk feeds and good nutrition
💧 Provide access to fresh, clean water at all times
🌬️ Ensure good ventilation while avoiding draughts at calf level

If you have any concerns about calf health please give us a call🩺

Ram Fertility Testing🐑

Have you recently purchased a new ram? Are your ewes repeating to a particular ram?

A ram's fertility plays a vital role in flock performance and lambing success. A pre-breeding fertility examination can help identify potential issues and ensure your rams are fit and ready for work.

The video and picture below show a good quality semen sample collected from a ram during a recent fertility examination 🔬

To get your ram tested or for any queries, please give us a call and speak to one of our vets! 🐑

Bluetongue update 🪰💉

6 new cases of Bluetongue (BTV-3) have been detected in the south of Ireland this week with all animals showing clinical signs including crusty noses, drooling, mouth ulcers, lacrimation, lameness, crusty teats.

We must remain vigilant for clinical signs amongst our flocks and herds here in NI. Midges are very much still active as seen in the picture below taken today.

Protection is key! Bultavo 3 vaccine is avaliable,
🐑Sheep require 1ml under the skin
🐄 Cattle require 1ml twice, 3 weeks apart into the muscle

Are you ready for housing?Give us a call with any questions you may have or for advice on vaccines to suit your herd🐮💉

The Five-Point Plan 🐑

1️⃣ Treat - all clinical cases should receive prompt treatment. Any paring should be kept to a minimum
2️⃣ Avoid Spread - footbathing can help reduce the spread of disease
3️⃣ Vaccinate - Use of Footvax vaccination has been shown to reduce levels of footrot significantly within flocks
4️⃣ Cull - Some sheep are chronic carriers and will not respond to treatment, these animals should be culled.
5️⃣ Quarantine - All lame sheep should be isolated from the flock. Newly purchased sheep should be isolated for 28 days and observed for signs of lameness.
