Own A Pony Day in pictures … 🦄

It’s been great to see our OAP days so well attended. It really isn’t all about that riding, in fact that is only a small part of horse ownership. Learning to get stuck in and carry out all the tasks involved is so important and it’s what is going to shape our next generation of horse lovers.

For those of you who just can’t wait for the next half term, we do run Stable Management throughout term time every other Wednesday from 6pm - 7pm where you can continue learning all aspects of horse care and husbandry. ♥️

⚠️ NOTICE REGARDING RIDING HAT HIRE.

Hat hire is only free to our beginner riders, we strongly recommend that once committed you purchase your own riding hat for maximum safety and fit.

Hat hire is chargeable to all those who are not on beginner lessons at a cost of £2.

Thank you. 👍🏻

At NA Equestrian, we’re passionate about keeping our horses happy, healthy, and safe. 🦄 One of the most sensitive but important topics in the riding world is rider weight limits. This has come to the forefront more and more over recent years and is now a licensing requirement for all riding schools (as it should be) and is heavily governed across the equestrian world. It’s something that can feel personal, but it’s not about body image or ability it’s purely about horse welfare. Please read on …

Unfortunately, we’ve noticed that sometimes riders are not fully honest about their weight. While it may feel like “just a few extra kilos,” this can have serious consequences for the horse, the rider, and the riding experience. Let’s break down why honesty matters, and why rider skill also plays a huge role in how weight is carried. 👇🏻

Why Weight Matters for Horses: 🐴

Unlike bikes or vehicles, horses are living, breathing animals with spines, muscles, joints, and limits. Carrying too much weight can cause:

Back strain: Horses & ponies spines are not designed to carry excessive loads. Too much weight can cause muscle damage and even long-term injury.

Joint stress: Knees, hocks, and fetlocks can become sore or permanently damaged.

Saddle fit issues: Even the best saddle won’t protect a horse if the rider’s weight is beyond the horse’s safe carrying capacity. It can actually cause the saddle to fit incorrectly and cause further discomfort to the horse.

Shortened working life: A horse consistently carrying more than they should may suffer arthritis, lameness, or an early retirement.

A horse cannot “say no” in words, but they will communicate through behaviour; reluctance to move forward, bucking, hollowing their back, showing soreness afterwards etc etc.

Skill vs. Weight - The Balance: ⚖️

It’s also important to recognise that riding skill matters enormously.

A balanced, experienced rider spreads their weight evenly and moves with the horse, making even a heavier load manageable.
An unbalanced or beginner rider, even if lighter, may bounce heavily, grip awkwardly, or sit unevenly, which can actually do more damage than a skilled but heavier rider.
This is why we look at both weight and ability when matching horses and riders. It’s never as simple as a number on a scale, it’s about the horse’s welfare and the quality of the ride.

Why Honesty Is Essential:

When a rider under-declares their weight, the wrong horse may be selected putting that animal at risk, saddles may not then fit correctly leading to pain or injury. In worst cases, horses can become lame, needing time off or even ending their working career early.
We always match riders to horses with careful thought and consideration, it’s never an easy decision.

Our Approach & Management:

We set clear weight limits for each horse based on their size, build, fitness, and training.
We carefully consider rider skill and balance when pairing horses and riders. Our horses are part of our family, and their welfare comes first - ALWAYS. ♥️

We kindly ask all riders to be honest with us when booking and when filling in new or updated rider registration forms. This isn’t about judgment, it’s about ensuring the safety of the horse and creating the best possible experience for horse and rider.

We will, as of the 1st of September be weighing all of our riders to ensure the safety of both horse and rider. We are not alone in doing this (it is common practice for most riding schools, just new to us). Any rider who does not meet our strict 14 stone weight limit will not be allowed to ride (this will include full riding attire).

Final Thought:

Horse riding is about partnership and partnerships are built on trust. Our horses trust us to protect them, and we ask our riders to help us honour that trust by being open and honest.

When you declare your true weight, you’re not just filling in a booking form, you’re actively safeguarding the health, comfort, and happiness of the horse that you are riding. .

Thank you for your understanding. 🫶🏻

❗️A polite reminder that we do have a 48 hour cancellation policy.

It has been especially hard keeping track of group numbers and absences over the holidays. Please ensure that if you are unable to attend your regular lesson due to going away on holiday or a prior commitment, that you give us as much notice as possible (ideally one week) and do not drop it upon us at the last minute. We always ask that if more than one week’s notice is given, that we are reminded one week prior to your absence as it is incredibly difficult to remember what everyone is doing individually. We generally run the diary one week in advance for group lessons so this time frame is ideal for us to work with.

In order to amalgamate and rearrange group lessons we need time. This is to allow other’s to change their plans if necessary and for us to plan accordingly in terms of staffing, ponies, matching abilities etc etc.

If less than 48 hours notice is given, the lesson is liable for full payment. Unfortunately we still have staff wages to pay, ponies to feed and care for, the list goes on regardless.

Each day is planned with the precision of a space launch, all we ask is that you help us to keep things running as smoothly and easily as possible for everyone’s benefit including our ponies welfare. 🫶🏻
