Sky Equine & Canine Physiotherapy I am a qualified Equine Physiotherapist with a keen interest in Kissing Spines horses, offering intensive physio packages. Katie

With many years experience in helping clients and their horses to achieve a more holistic approach to wellbeing through physio. I gained my Diploma Qualification in 2018 to be an ESMT (Equine Sports Massage Therapist) and I trained with The College of Animal Physiotherapy (TCAP). In 2021, I qualified as an Animal Physiotherapist, also through TCAP and in March 2022 I have introduced Salt Therapy using the Newmarket Equine Salt Therapy system as a mobile service. The aim of physiotherapy and ESM (Equine Sports Massage) is to promote a healthy, happy and relaxed equine friend. It is used to help loosen tight muscles, relieve muscle cramp and decrease muscle fatigue. I aim to help restore your horse’s range of movement and flexibility as well as helping to speed up recovery from illness and injury. ESM can be beneficial to any horse, whether they are at the top of their competing discipline or whether they are a happy hacker. Veterinary care and advice should always be sought in a situation where a horse or pony is lame to establish the underlying problem. Physiotherapy and massage can then be used to help restore function where needed. I operate and abide by the current Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. If a treatment is being offered as maintenance, then I can carry on and any major findings will be reported back to your vet so that they are aware for future reference. If your horse is currently under any kind of veterinary care, then permission/consent will be needed before commencing treatments. There may be times when it is not possible for me to carry out a treatment, once the initial assessment has taken place. If this should be the case, I will discuss this fully with you at the time. I’ll

In March 2022, I trained in Equine Salt Therapy and am able to offer this as a mobile service where I come to your yard. Salt therapy has many benefits for your horse or pony and deals with respiratory, sinus and skin conditions. By using the Newmarket Equine Salt Therapy System I am able to bring you a medical grade salt system to really help with the breathing and skin conditions. Please get in contact if you would like to know more or to book a treatment for your equine friend.

Horse owners are being urged to take action now following a spate of recent cases of equine grass sickness.

There is currently no cure for the disease, with only 20% of horses who contract it in Britain surviving.

Dr Beth Wells stressed that all types of horses can get grass sickness, and it is not isolated to natives.

“The breed profile will mostly be natives and cobs, but that’s because that’s what we mostly have out at grass,” she explained. “We see it across all breeds.

“For owners it’s devastating because it happens so quickly and there is some sort of stigma surrounding the disease, but it’s not the owner’s fault and we need to get rid of that stigma.”

She encouraged people to read up on the signs of grass sickness and to sign up for alerts of cases in your area.

As if this year couldn’t throw any more injuries at me…

The Dr then says ive probably torn the meniscus in my knee and to rest whilst I wait for an MRI, what better way than to red light for the inflammation and then K-Tape!!! And carry on working 🫣

Mabel and Scamp have their own Instagram account following our journey of chaos.

I recently went to a training day to brush up further on canine skills and one thing Faye mentioned a lot was to film how the dog is moving as you can slow it down and watch it again. Horses are different and it’s not needed as much.

Well on their page I post a lot of videos but I managed to get one of Scamp moving and it got me thinking… puppies are all over the place while their muscles and ligaments gain strength and coordination. I can’t stop looking now every movement both my dogs make.

Mabel being a dachshund, protection over her back is so important and I’ll be continuing to monitor her movement too

For now, here’s Scamp’s video. If you want to follow us on Instagram, here’s the link mabelandscamp.adventures

Please meet the newest member of the Sky Equine team… Scamp. An English springer spaniel. He’s settled in really well with Mabel and the two are now inseparable.

He’s calm (at the moment) but loves to carry a stick around.

As I venture more into the canine physio world, Mabel and Scamp will be well and truly by my side, along with Skyla of course but she’s still very much… horse physio 😁😁🤣

I’ve had a great day today, furthering my knowledge in more depth around canine physiotherapy and gait assessment.

Listening to Faye today has given me loads to think about, consider and adapt into my existing practice.

Even as an equine therapist I’m always furthering my knowledge, keeping up to date with new research and being the best I can be for my clients. I intend to do the same for my canine patients too.

This winter I will be offering more appts for canine physio whilst maintaining an equine base too, so that I can give my body an opportunity to rest when needed. It takes quite a toll physically treating horses everyday.

This week has been a bit of a mixed bag of emotions, four legged clients and adjusting to be cold and wet weather again!!!

First all emotions… Skyla returned to school in Year 3 and although she was as cool as cucumber - me, I was not. My little girl is literally growing up right in front of my eyes and it’s scary! She’s also a miniature version of me and it’s like having a business meeting with myself 😬😬💕💕 only now it gets a bit heated !!!!

A mixed bag of clients too from a few equine clients to canine too. I met some lovely dogs and their owners at the Winslow Show and this week I was able to catch up with them and start their treatments. I’m loving doing more dogs and it’s challenging my brain which I love. This morning before going to Hartwell for my afternoon shift, I have reports to write and send to clients.

Then the rain… I know we needed the rain and it’s lovely seeing the fields start to green up again but honestly, in traditional British style, one day it’s hot 🥵 then it’s raining 🌧️. Nothing in between, not a slow decline in temperature and cloud!! Just a sudden change. Anyway, we need but I am missing the warmth!

Yesterday though, I was invited to start to an Assessment Plan for Izzy and her new horse Lionel. He’s a youngster and she has big plans for him so wanted to know where he was at the moment in terms of his strength and mobility and how she can work through a plan to achieve her goals and produce him. This is a whole new service that I am offering this autumn and winter.

Watch this space as I’ll introduce him properly in the next day or so.

Plus… I have another secret I have been harbouring which I will reveal shortly

Have a great weekend and don’t forget if your horse or dog needs a treatment, drop me a message as I have some random spaces coming up

Kate and Skyla xx
