My clever sausage is now a therapy dog with 🙌🏼

I've been wanting to get him assessed for a therapy dog for a long time, just never got round to doing it! Bruce is so good with people and anyone that meets him really adores him. He attends my Dogs Trust talks with me already and he frequently spends time at climbing walls with my husband, so I know that he is a very robust and reliable dog around people.

His welfare is my priority as always, so if I have any concerns about him being uncomfortable in any environment I will always advocate for him.

I look forward to going out in the community with him soon!

Did you know that a study carried out in 2023 on 70,000 dog bites revealed that dog bite incidents rise by around 4% on hotter days and 11% on days with high UV exposure?

It's important to remember that the hot weather can have an impact on our dog's behaviours either directly or indirectly.

Some dogs struggle to sleep when it's hot, this leads to a more tired dog during the day, which can then lead to a less tolerant dog. This is just one example!

Please give your dogs extra space during this hot weather and do not force them out, especially to busy areas.

Reactivity class ❗

Darcy and Hazel both have very big feelings about certain things and get super frustrated easily.

Today in class we practiced the 'switch' exercise. This is when we ask our dogs to change the side they are being walked on.

This is very useful when walking towards a trigger with your dog as you can easily position them further away from the trigger and use your own body as a barrier, making it easier for your dog to walk past.

These two girls did so well over the last few weeks, and we managed to finish the session just before it got too hot! ☀️

'What's the best long lasting chew?'

Chewing is a natural behaviour that is usually followed by consuming and digestion. This means that your dog needs to eat something rather than just chew. It's the last part of their predatory sequence.

So chews that your dog can chew AND eat are best, rather than artificially flavoured bones and chews.

Some good chew examples include:
- rabbit ears
- buffalo ears
- beef skins
- beef trachea
- chicken necks

This varies from dog to dog and puppies may need softer chews. Always check packaging to make sure the chew is appropriate for your dog and NEVER leave them unattended with a chew.
