Supporting humans and their dogs ❤️

Allowing adolescent dogs to observe a novel sound or stimulus and disengage in their own time teaches them that they can safely investigate their environment without needing to react or be guided away. It builds confidence, emotional regulation and the ability to process new experiences calmly, rather than becoming overwhelmed.

Dogs need time to process and assess new information before deciding how to respond.

You should redirect our dog when their body language shows they are becoming overaroused or are unable to disengage on their own for a prolonged period of time. Look for signs such as stiffening, leaning forward, barking, whining, lunging or repeated fixating, at this point, use an easy recall away and reward them for choosing to move with you.

Some dogs need help to disengage and that's okay too. Learn from this and next time increase the distance between them and the stimulus.

'The real challenge lies not in feeling deeply, but living in a world that doesn't always know how to support that sensitivity'.

Imagine a highly emotionally sensitive person being placed in an environment that constantly overwhelms them.

or if they are in a non supportive relationship. They’re criticised for needing space, punished for becoming upset, and expected to simply cope because the other person can.

Over time, they may become anxious, withdrawn, reactive or constantly on edge.

Now imagine a highly sensitive dog experiencing the same thing.

A dog who finds busy environments overwhelming may be repeatedly taken into crowded places. A dog who is uncomfortable around other dogs may be forced into close interactions. A dog who needs more time to process new experiences may be rushed, corrected or punished when they show discomfort.

The problem isn’t necessarily that the dog is difficult, they may simply be struggling in an environment that doesn’t allow them to feel safe.

Just as we wouldn’t expect every person to thrive in the same environment, we shouldn’t expect every dog to either.

Understanding what your dog is communicating and adapting the environment to meet their needs can make a huge difference. The same, sensitive dog can thrive in the right environment.

Ziggy really struggled through his adolescence and his owners were at a breaking point.

Luckily with a lot of hard work, a behaviour modification plan, appropriate outlets, suitable diet and veterinary intervention we got Ziggy on the right track.

The words from his owners mean so much, because this is what I want to do, I want to help rebuild that relationship between you and your dog. I understand how detached you can get from your dog, especially when you don't know where their unwanted behaviours come from.

Things I let my dog do that would send an 'alpha' dog trainer into a coma.

I hope most of you now know that NONE of these behaviours will turn your dog into a 'bad' dog (I actually don't think there's ever a bad dog, just a misunderstood one).

You don't need to leave the front door before your dog (unless you're working on some calmness or want to do it for safety purposes), you don't need to eat before your dog and you certainly don't need to walk in front of your dog, they have four legs so they are naturally faster than humans!

Of course you don't have to let your dog do these things if you don't want to, I just want to make you aware that I do and Bruce is a pretty happy chap and we have a pretty good relationship 🥰

I’ll take your dog out for a 45–60 minute walk and work on the things you’d like to improve, whether that’s loose lead walking, recall, socialisation, confidence, focus or other basic life skills.

Every walk is tailored to your dog, and I’ll send you an update afterwards so you know what we worked on and how they got on. This is a great option if you are looking for someone to take your dog out while you're at work, if you have a young puppy in need of some positive socialisation or maybe we already worked together and you want me to carry on some of the training while you're busy doing life.

I made a new friend yesterday 🥺

Wolf has joined the puppy package and I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time yesterday.

Wow! What an absolutely fantastic day at Woof Fest today!

Thank you so much to everyone that came along for a chat and a photo. I've had so many wonderful conversations and met the loveliest dogs and their owners.

I hope I helped as many of you as I could with the training and behaviour advice, it was a pleasure.

The best thing to teach your young puppy is simple:

Learning to do nothing.

We don't have to constantly play with our puppies or train them. When we let our puppies watch the world go by at a safe distance, we let them process a ton of information. This information is crucial for successful socialisation and development.

This can actually be very tiring for young puppies as their brain is working overtime! So, if you do take your puppy out to watch the world, make sure you do it in small amounts and let them get plenty of sleep afterwards.

Douglas here is smashing his training, simply watching other dogs, people (and even ducks!) walk by 🥰
