The best thing to teach your young puppy is simple:

Learning to do nothing.

We don't have to constantly play with our puppies or train them. When we let our puppies watch the world go by at a safe distance, we let them process a ton of information. This information is crucial for successful socialisation and development.

This can actually be very tiring for young puppies as their brain is working overtime! So, if you do take your puppy out to watch the world, make sure you do it in small amounts and let them get plenty of sleep afterwards.

When you forget to place the lid on the 'magic' box and you're working with a spaniel cross 😂

Some dogs love pulling toys out of bags and boxes, the pulling it out brings them more joy than the actual toy itself! I've seen it in gun breeds and gun breed crosses!

Teaching your dog a 'middle' is a very fun exercise! It's great for confidence building and it can also be used for recall.

All you need are some small treats and your dog. Remember to start off in a low distracting environment first, before progressing outside.

Long lines are one of my favourite tools for giving dogs more freedom on walks, but they need to be handled safely! 🐾

One of the biggest mistakes I see is constant tension on the line. For reactive or worried dogs, this can add unnecessary pressure when they're already struggling with their environment.

Instead, aim for slack wherever possible and allow your dog to sniff, explore and move naturally.

A few important safety tips:
🐾 Feed the line through one hand rather than letting it trail on the floor
🐾 Never wrap the line around your hand, wrist or arm
🐾 Gather the line gradually rather than suddenly grabbing it
🐾 Give your dog space from triggers rather than relying on the lead to hold them back
🐾 Remember that a long line is there to provide freedom AND safety

And please don't underestimate how dangerous wrapping a long line around your hand can be. If your dog suddenly takes off, the force can cause serious injuries to your wrist or arm.

Working at the vets, we frequently saw dogs with loose dew claws and sometimes they had to be removed.

I never knew their contribution to a dog's movement and the long-term effects of removing them. Very interesting.

Did you know that in hot weather, intense sniffing is hard on dogs because the physical act of sniffing and the need to pant to cool down use conflicting breathing patterns. When a dog works hard to process scents, they stop effective panting, which rapidly raises their core body temperature and increases the risk of heat exhaustion.

So, just be careful when you are finding alternative activities for your dogs in this heat! ☀️
