Has extreme dog breeding gone too far?

When I asked Vanessa Barnes from APGAW how the public had responded to the Innate Health Assessment, she said the reaction had been overwhelmingly supportive.

And one message keeps coming through: people are increasingly uncomfortable with how far breeding for extreme characteristics has been allowed to go.
But where should the line be drawn?

I'd genuinely be interested to hear your thoughts below.

In the latest episode of Sit, Paws and Listen, Iโ€™m joined by Vanessa Barnes from APGAW to talk about dog breeding, exaggerated features and the Innate Health Assessment (IHA).
This isn't about breeders versus everyone else, or taking away the breeds people love. It's about asking a much more important question: can we preserve the dogs we love while putting their health and welfare first?

Many of us grew up hearing the same advice:
"Rub their nose in it and they'll learn."
But is that actually teaching the puppy anything?
Sarah Rutten explains why understanding your puppy's behaviour is far more effective than punishment.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What advice were you given when you first started toilet training a puppy?

When we see aggression, we often focus on the behaviour.
Sarah Rutten encourages us to look one step deeper.
Fear is often the emotion driving what we see on the surface, and unless we address that fear, we're only treating the symptom, not the cause.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have you ever experienced fear-based reactivity with a dog?

A reliable recall isn't just about convenience.
It can be the difference between your dog running back to you... or into danger.

In this clip, Sarah Rutten explains why teaching recall should be one of the very first things every puppy owner focuses on.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What's the best tip you've ever been given for teaching recall?

A woman was arrested after putting a dog's shock collar on her daughter.

Sarah Rutten shares a perspective that really made me stop and think:
"If this is child abuse... why is it considered a dog training tool?"

Whether you agree or disagree, it's a conversation worth having because the choices we make as dog owners have a real impact on our dogs' welfare.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I'd love to hear your thoughts. Do you think shock collars should still be legal? Please keep the discussion respectful.

Season 2 starts today!

I'm delighted to welcome Sarah Rutten to Sit, Paws and Listen.

We discuss some of the biggest misconceptions in dog ownership, why understanding your dog's needs matters, and how small changes in the way we teach can have a huge impact.

One day, every dog owner faces the hardest decision of all.

Lady Bathurst shares a beautiful reminder that although it's the gift we never want to give, knowing when it's time is one of the greatest acts of kindness we can offer.

Somebody's had a busy morning... ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’ค

After a morning of socialisation, exploring new sights and sounds, and a little bit of training, Sybil has decided she's earned a well-deserved nap.

People often think socialisation is all about meeting lots of dogs. In reality, it's about helping puppies experience the world in a positive way, building confidence, resilience, and learning that new things aren't scary.

Sometimes, the hardest part of a puppy's day is all the sniffing they have to do! โค๏ธ
