If you're bribing your dog to behave, you aren't training them. You're negotiating with them.
I see it every single week here in Ashford. Owners come to me exhausted, frustrated, and holding a pouch full of sausages, wondering why their dog still drags them down the street or lunges at other dogs.
They've been told by purely positive trainers that if they just find a high enough value treat, the dog will magically stop the bad behaviour.
It's a lie.
Your dog doesn't have a treat problem. They have a leadership problem, they have a boundaries problem, and you've had a trainer who won't tell you the truth. Dogs, especially high-energy, working, or guarding breeds, need structure. They need to know exactly what is expected of them, and they need fair, clear corrections when they cross the line, just as much as they need praise when they get it right. That is what balanced training is. It uses all four quadrants of operant conditioning fairly to create a dog that respects you, rather than a dog that only listens when you have food in your hand.

If you've been through two or three other trainers and you're still not getting results, it's time to stop making excuses and start putting in the real work.

Today I had to say goodbye to my beautiful German shepherd Mia, and it's absolutely soul-destroying. Yesterday she was running around with my granddaughter, and today, during her operation, she passed away. Here today, gone tomorrow. Look after your dogs, friends and family; you never know when they will be gone.

Have you already paid a trainer, only to be told your dog can't be fixed?

There is nothing more crushing than finally asking for help, handing over your money, and having a professional tell you that your dog just needs to be managed on medication for the rest of their life. Or worse, being told that you are the problem because you aren't throwing treats fast enough. You leave feeling more hopeless than when you started.

Please hear this: a trainer failing to fix your dog does not mean your dog is unfixable. It just means that specific approach failed. When you limit yourself to only one way of training, you limit the dogs you can help. Balanced training gives you the full range of communication tools, and it gets results where management-only approaches run out of road.

Don't let a failed training attempt write your dog's future. If you're ready for a second opinion, reach out.

"It's just a dog, why are you so stressed about it?"

If one more person says this to you, you might actually scream. People who have easy dogs think your stress is an overreaction. They think you're choosing to be anxious. They don't understand that your dog's behaviour dictates your schedule, your social life, your finances, and your mental health. It is never just a dog. It is a massive, disruptive force in your daily life, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

You are allowed to be deeply affected by this. Your stress is a completely rational response to an incredibly difficult situation. You don't need to justify your feelings to people who don't get it. You just need to find the people who do, and start taking the steps to regain control of your life.

You aren't overreacting. If you're ready to take the pressure off, send me a message.

A lot of people think the Halti or a figure-of-8 lead is the "safe" option.THE RESEARCH SAYS OTHERWISE. πŸ›‘

When a dog pulls against a head collar, the leash turns the head sideways while the body keeps going forward. That combination of forces β€” rotational and translational at the same time β€” loads the cervical spine in a way it isn't designed to handle.

That's not a misuse issue. THAT'S THE MECHANISM. It happens every single time the dog pulls, no matter how well the collar fits or how carefully you use it. ⚠️

The behavioural side is just as consistent. Multiple studies found dogs on head collars crouching, pawing at their noses, fighting the leash, and refusing to walk β€” across every design tested, in every dog tested. What looks like a calmer dog is often just a dog that's been physically prevented from reacting.

And that's the part nobody talks about. 🀫

Because here's what you've actually been sold:
You've been told this is a training solution. A kinder way to stop your dog pulling.
Something that will fix the problem.

BUT IT DOESN'T FIX ANYTHING. ❌

It's a management tool β€” and not even a particularly good one, because the moment it comes off, the dog pulls exactly the same as it did before. Nothing has changed. The dog hasn't learned a thing. It just knows that when that thing is on its face, it can't go anywhere.

You were sold a training tool. You got a muzzle with better branding.
That's not training. THAT'S CONTAINMENT.

Slip collars get a bad reputation, and honestly, that reputation is entirely down to people using them wrong
POSITION MATTERS with a slip collar, and here's why:

When it sits high on the neck β€” just behind the ears and under the jawline β€” the lower jaw sits above it as a natural barrier, the musculature is dense and firm, and the trachea, thyroid gland, and major blood vessels are all well clear of the pressure point.

Keep it there, use it with proper pressure and release, and it delivers a CLEAR, LEARNABLE SIGNAL. 🎯 The dog feels pressure when it pulls and the pressure disappears the instant it yields.

More importantly, the dog is actually learning something. It's learning that pulling creates pressure and walking nicely removes it. That's a lesson it carries whether the lead is on or off. That's the actual difference. πŸ‘‡

πŸ”Ή HEAD COLLAR RISKS are built into the design.
πŸ”Ή SLIP COLLAR β€” no inherent risk, only misuse risk.

One of them actually trains the dog. The other just stops it pulling long enough for the walk to be over.

Do you feel guilty because you don't even want to stroke them sometimes?

They've been an absolute nightmare all day. They dragged you on the walk, they barked at the window for an hour, and they knocked over your coffee. Then, in the evening, they come up and rest their head on your lap, looking for affection. And honestly? You just feel numb. You stroke them out of obligation, but the genuine warmth just isn't there right now.

That disconnect is the heaviest burden of owning a difficult dog. You feel like a monster for not wanting to cuddle them. But affection requires a foundation of mutual respect and peace. When the relationship is entirely based on conflict and management, the bond fractures. You fix the bond by fixing the behaviour. When the conflict ends, the genuine affection comes back.

If you want to actually enjoy your dog's company again, let's get to work. Send me a message.

Do you secretly worry that your dog is too old to change?

You've been dealing with this for years. The pulling, the barking, the chaos β€” it's just become part of the furniture. You see videos of trainers working with young dogs and you think, that's great for them, but my dog is five. The habits are too ingrained. It's too late for us.

It is never too late. Dogs are incredibly adaptable. They live in the present moment. The only thing keeping those old habits alive is the fact that the current environment still allows them. The moment you change the rules, change the tools, and change the communication, the dog will change. I have seen ten-year-old dogs completely transform when they finally get clear guidance.

Don't write your dog off. If you're ready to prove yourself wrong, send me a DM.
