A funny story!
As Rehab vets, Rimante and Pete are often asked to see dogs with various mobility problems. Their mobility issues can range from strains and sprains to fractures, from elbow and hip dysplasia to spinal disease, from old-age muscle weakness to neurological disorders. So, after nearly 5 years running our rehab business, we are used to seeing most, if not all causes of mobility issues.
However, a week or so ago Rimante, whilst working as a locum vet in general practice, was asked to do a home visit to a collapsed dog, belonging to an elderly couple. Obviously, she immediately thought about all the possible causes for this dog to be collapsed, at home, in the garden, and was preparing all kinds of possible treatment options, at least in her mind.
When she got there, the old couple were distraught, as nothing they tried could make the dog get up. In fact, his head was flat on the decking in the garden and he couldn’t even lift his head up! Rimante did a full health check, once she got there, from all the joints to the spine, from the chest to the abdomen and more. She then decided to try and help the dog up. But the dog could not be shifted and its head seemed firmly stuck to the ground. She considered spinal pain in the neck and other serious conditions.
And then……..luckily she noticed that the dog’s name tag, attached to his collar, was stuck in between the slats of the decking outside and the poor dog had been stuck there for hours, simply because of that! After releasing the dog’s collar, he quickly got up and ran away! Case solved! The owners were both extremely relieved as well as a bit embarrassed to have called the vet out to release a tag from their decking.
So, after all, this was a simple case which was easily solved. Phew! And after all our years of experience in veterinary medicine and in rehabilitation, this was a new one to us too!😆
What funny stories do you have to tell us?
