🐾 Happy Tails Half Term Fundraiser 🐾

Following on from my post about Podencos and the reality faced by many Spanish hunting dogs, I wanted to do something practical to help. ❤️

This half term, I’m running three special Happy Tails group activities, with 100% of proceeds donated to Save My Life Animal Charity Benidorm.

Each activity gives you and your dog the chance to experience something a little different, while building useful skills for everyday life.

📖 Sunday 17th — Training Workshop | £30
Practise the skills you’ve already been working on around other dogs, focusing on:
• Engagement
• Impulse control
• Focus around distractions
• Transferring existing skills into a busier environment

🌙 Thursday 22nd — Dusk Group Walk | £15
A rural group walk exploring changes in light, smells and sounds, while walking alongside other dogs.

🎃 Saturday 31st — Halloween Street Walk | £15
A morning urban walk past Halloween decorations, giving our dogs the opportunity to calmly process unusual sights in their environment.

🐕 All activities will be lead-based.

The importance of building impulse control in your dog ⏱️

This teenage boy is a real character, with plenty of fire in his belly!

His owners came to me for help with some unwanted behaviours he had developed, both at home and out and about. They wanted to keep their fun-loving boy, while helping him understand some boundaries and make better choices.

For some of the behaviours we were seeing, we decided that building his impulse control would be an important part of the picture.

Impulse control isn’t about stopping our dogs from being excited or having fun. It’s about helping them learn to pause, think and respond, even when something exciting is happening around them.

By practising these skills in a controlled environment, we can gradually increase the level of distraction and help our dogs learn how to manage themselves when things become more stimulating.

It can also give us an opportunity to slow things down and help our dogs stay connected with us, rather than immediately acting on their impulses.

For a teenage dog with plenty of enthusiasm, learning that pause can make a huge difference — without taking away the fun-loving personality his owners adore. 🥰

Impulse control is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice.

We’ve been working on something really special. 🥹

These guys came to me with their lovely spaniel, who couldn’t get his nose off the ground!

They just wanted to be able to enjoy their walks, trust that he would respond to them and, importantly, not get pulled over in the process!

We’ve spent the last few weeks working on engagement, disengagement, loose lead walking and recall. Now it’s time to start increasing the criteria and, most importantly, hand the lead over to Bob — because ultimately, he just wants to be able to walk his dog. ❤️

Yesterday was the first time Bob has been able to hold the lead.

We’ve still got a bit of work to do, but to say I’m proud of this pair is an understatement.

It’s not about expecting the dog to simply “listen” — it’s about building the skills, communication and confidence that make those walks easier for everyone.
