Congratulations to Charlie Tewson, our dentistry clinician, on completing the theory part of his European Veterinary Dental College exams.

This is a fantastic achievement and a real reflection of the hard work, commitment and dedication Charlie has put into his specialist training journey.

With the theory exams completed, there is just the practical element to go - another huge step towards his continued development in veterinary dentistry.

Well done Charlie - a brilliant accomplishment from all of us at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists.

Meet Edgar – a young Sphynx cat with a challenging condition.
Edgar has been suffering from chronic diarrhoea, passing faeces multiple times a day. This is not only difficult for his owners to manage but also very uncomfortable for him.
He is under the care of our Feline Medicine Specialist, Sam Taylor, and has now undergone two faecal transplants to help restore a healthy balance of intestinal bacteria. This procedure is used in both cats and dogs in certain cases of chronic gastrointestinal disease, and our understanding of the importance of gut bacteria in both animals and people continues to grow.
His donor is Tinsel the tabby, kindly providing the “good bacteria” needed for the procedure, with the help of one of our fantastic nurses.
We’re pleased to say that Edgar is already showing some improvement, and we’re hopeful he will continue to progress with his newly restored gut balance.

Let’s talk about poo!
It might not be the most glamorous topic, but at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, faecal transplants can play an important role in helping some of our patients with gastrointestinal disease.
Certain conditions, particularly those causing chronic diarrhoea, can be linked to dysbiosis - an imbalance in the normal bacteria within the intestines, often involving an overgrowth of less helpful bacteria. This can happen due to underlying disease, prolonged antibiotic treatment, or other changes within the gut.
In selected cases, giving a patient a carefully prepared “top up” of healthy gut bacteria from a screened donor animal can help support their intestinal microbiome.
At Lumbry Park, our poo donors are healthy pets who have been screened for infectious diseases and are not receiving antibiotics themselves. Their donations are carefully prepared and safely administered to recipient patients - usually via the bottom!
This is an evolving area of veterinary medicine, with ongoing research helping us learn more all the time. In the right patients, we have seen some encouraging results.
Pictured here is Sam Taylor’s dog, Fee, who has donated her poo to several other dogs - and, quite rightly, always receives an extra biscuit for her efforts!

Today we had more than one reason to celebrate
Monty, one of our wonderful chemotherapy patients, recently turned five – and we were so lucky to mark the occasion with him.
Monty was diagnosed with an aggressive sarcoma in December 2024, when he was just three years old. At the time, the tumour had already extended into the cranial cavity, and his prognosis was understandably guarded.
He underwent palliative radiation therapy alongside medical management, including chemotherapy tablets. While we were initially concerned his time might be limited, Monty had other ideas…
Sixteen months on, he continues to defy the odds and is still going strong, with no signs of cancer progression.
We feel incredibly privileged to be part of Monty’s journey 🐾

Georgia Papazisi, one of our Internal Medicine Residents, recently presented a talk on hypoglycaemia at the VetCPD Congress in Bath. Sam Taylor, Medicine and Feline Specialist at Lumbry Park, also contributed with lectures on diabetes and urinary tract disease in cats. We’re proud of our clinicians’ passion for teaching and sharing knowledge within the profession.

Mabel is a Ragdoll kitten who came to see us in March after being taken in by the fantastic who we are lucky enough to work with treating some of their lovely cats. Mabel had been diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) a once fatal disease that we can now treat with antiviral medication. You can learn more here: https://icatcare.org/articles/feline-infectious-peritonitis-fip. Mabel had lots of fluid in her abdomen and was in very thin condition.

Mabel was quickly started on therapy under the guidance of Sam Taylor who researches this condition. Thankfully, Mabel responded well, the fluid resolved and she has gained weight. To top it all off as a success story, Mabel has been adopted by one of our Team at Lumbry Park and will undoubtably be spoilt and have a lovely life!

The photos show her when she first came to see us, thin, pale and with a big belly of fluid, and after treatment, bright eyed, bushy tailed and ready for her new home.
