2 DAYS - 24th & 25th OCTOBER 9.30am - 3.30pm.

We've had an unexpected working space become available on our weekend Scent Detection Workshop with Rachel Kuttner.

It's an incredible opportunity to learn from Rachel's extensive experience operationally in explosive detection, sport detection and advanced scentwork training.

For dogs and teams already working on target odour, with established search skills, looking to work and refine their techniques to the next level across Route Searching and complex area searches.

A great day of scentwork earlier this week at one of my most popular venues 🐾👃

A brilliant search venue, giving plenty of opportunities to adapt the searches to suit a real mix of dog & handler abilities.

We covered lots throughout the day, including:
🐾 Discussions around systems of search and how we can apply them
🐾 Adapting searches to get the best from each individual dog
🐾 Observing what’s happening during the search, adapting
when needed and overcoming the challenges the environment presented
🐾 When & when not to help more as the handler
🐾 Introducing a new odour for some dogs within a more challenging environment
🐾 Building indication into the search for one dog

Lots of problem solving, learning and teamwork from both ends of the lead! 💙💛

🐾 WHAT A BUSY WEEK AT HAPPY DOG TRAINING! 🐾

It’s been another full-on week, with lots of dogs and handlers working through different stages of their scentwork journey 💙💛

🐾 Odour imprinting — building a strong understanding of target odour before taking those foundations forward and introducing the odour into environmental searches.

🐶 Beginner classes — including our puppies! Building those all-important foundations from the very start.

👃 Odour ID, Line-Ups & Carousels — stripping things back to work on odour recognition, discrimination, decision-making and clarity.

🛣️ Two-Day Route Searching Workshop — exploring the principles of route searching, the different methods used and how route searching can be adapted from operational applications for pet and sport dogs. This included working on developing search strategy, independence and teamwork between dog and handler, while considering how to apply these skills in a practical, engaging and appropriate way for each team.

It has been brilliant to see so many teams learning, progressing and building their skills.

🐾✈️ WHAT A VENUE ✈️🐾

A fantastic workshop today — a brilliant novel venue that always gives our dogs and handlers plenty to think about!

Lots of problem solving — this venue is particularly interesting because the environment can really make you think. Wind, changing airflow and the elements all influence how odour moves and where it can be found, meaning the picture presented to the dog isn’t always as straightforward as we might expect. Rather than simply finding the hide, it is often about watching the dog, interpreting what the odour is doing and working together to solve the problem as a team.

Some brilliant searching, thoughtful handling and great teamwork throughout the day.

🐾 A busy couple of days at Happy Dog Training! 🐾

Today saw Week 1 of our two 12-week Beginners Scentwork Courses get underway, with new teams starting right from the foundations and beginning their scentwork journey. 💙💛

And last night was Week 1 of our 3-week New Odour Workshop, with teams starting the process of introducing, recognising and building confidence on a new target odour.

Different stages, different training goals — but the same focus on building confident, motivated dogs and strong handler-dog partnerships. 🐕👃

Lots of learning, lots of sniffing… and plenty more to come! 💙💛

🐾 ALL CLEAR? 🐾

Finding odour is one skill…
Knowing when there’s nothing there to find is another. 👀

Today was about so much more than “no odour” — search coverage, reading the dog, trusting the information they’re giving you and having the confidence to make the call.

A workshop that really made handlers think — challenge what they see, trust what their dog is telling them and know when they’ve done enough to confidently call it CLEAR. 🔥💙💛

Brilliant work from today’s teams — and tomorrow we do it all again with a fresh group of handlers & dogs. Can’t wait! 👀🔥
