A great conversation with Colin Butcher, The Pet Detective, who has spent more than twenty years helping to recover missing and stolen animals. Alongside his working cocker spaniel, Molly, and her remarkable scenting abilities, he has helped recover hundreds of pets.

There is a great deal of practical, actionable advice in the episode, but my key takeaways were:

* If your dog goes missing, stay at the point of loss if possible, while others help search the surrounding area.
* Have a prepared image of your dog, complete with contact numbers, ready to share immediately with people at the scene.
* If you believe there is any possibility that your dog has been stolen, report it as a theft straight away.
* And perhaps the simplest lesson of all:
* An unsupervised dog is a vulnerable dog.

There is plenty more useful advice on Colin’s YouTube channel, .

Craig Koshyk is author of Pointing Dogs Volume 1 – The Continentals and Volume 2 – The British and Irish Breeds. He also hosts the excellent Hunting Dog Confidential podcast and writes for Project Upland Magazine.

I really enjoyed this conversation, looking at pointing dogs through Craig’s global perspective.

Andy Hughes is a lifelong falconer who started, as a boy, with a tawny owl in his bedroom and an injured kestrel he rehabilitated before releasing.

He went on to spend decades hunting and flying everything from merlins to golden eagles, working closely with dogs throughout, including many years as a professional falconer at Skibo and Dunrobin Castles.

Much of that time was spent in the Highlands alongside the late Stephen Frank, at the heart of grouse hawking over pointers — widely regarded as the pinnacle of the sport.

This is a conversation about falconry, fieldcraft, dogs, and what it takes to make it all come together.
