Little Frankie was in for his second puppy appointment and spent parts of his first bath and blow dry snuggled up in my arms and climbing onto my shoulder for reassurance, and that's completely okay.

One thing I’m really passionate about is helping dogs feel safe and comfortable with grooming from the very beginning. My puppy programme includes 2 initial appointments focused on gentle introductions, desensitisation and building trust at their pace 💛

This can also be tailored for older nervous dogs too. If your dog struggles in busy traditional salons, is anxious, or has had a negative grooming experience before, feel free to message me and we can arrange a relaxed meet and greet first so they can get familiar with me and the space with no pressure.

It’s not always about achieving the “perfect groom” straight away. For me the priority is always helping your dog feel calm, safe and happy coming back 🫧✨

From fluffy teddy to fresh-faced girlie ✨

Sweet Peggy is only 7 months old and had only been to the groomers once before, so my priority was making sure she felt safe, comfortable and supported throughout.

For puppies, grooming is about so much more than the haircut. It’s a whole new environment, being away from mum for the first time, new sounds, handling by strangers, and new experiences.

Peggy was such a brave girl, and I think I may have made myself a new little bestie 🥹

We chose to go short over two appointments rather than one long session, giving Peggy time to decompress and ensuring she stayed comfortable and happy throughout. We also kept her sweet face and ears to hold onto some of that lovely puppy character ✂️

I absolutely love watching puppies grow in confidence, and I loved a little play in the garden with this girl 🐾

Brave boy Frankie’s first puppy intro session at Calm Canine 🤎🐾

Yesterday little Frankie visited for the first part of his Puppy Introduction Package, and I was very lucky to get lots of puppy snuggles 🥹

These first appointments are not about rushing into a full groom before the pup is ready. They’re about helping puppies feel safe, confident and relaxed in a completely new environment. getting used to the smells, sounds, handling, equipment and time away from their parents in a calm, positive way.

Frankie had a little explore of the studio, listened to the dryer in the background, and was even confident enough to let me gently run the clippers (without a blade attached) against his body to introduce the vibrations while being cuddled in my arms 🐶. We also enjoyed a tiny paw massage with paw lotion, followed by some playtime and decompression.

At Calm Canine, building trust always comes before the groom itself. Puppies need positive associations, choice, patience and breaks when they need them, especially during those early experiences. That’s why my approach is focused on low arousal, calm handling and going at the puppy’s pace 🐾

Next week at Frankie’s second session, we’ll look at introducing the bath, a small paw pad tidy, clearing around the eyes, and continuing his desensitisation journey ✂️🫧

For me, holistic grooming is about more than just the finished groom. It’s about building trust, forming a bond with the dog in front of me, and helping them grow in confidence with every appointment.

My goal is for dogs to feel safe, supported and cared for throughout the grooming process… the glow up is just a bonus ✨

Grooming appointments aren’t just about the haircut 🐾

Some dogs need a little extra reassurance, and honestly, that should be completely normal.

If George wants to lean into me while I’m drying him, get told he’s a brave boy 47 times, and receive emotional support kisses throughout his appointment… then that’s exactly what he’s getting 🥹

And yes, he is my dog 😂 but every dog that comes into my grooming space gets the same patience, gentleness and support.

I’d always rather slow things down and help a dog feel safe, than rush through for the sake of speed.

From fluffy little teddy bear to fresh-faced gentleman... 🧸

Peter came in a little unsure at first, and did briefly attempt to stage a dramatic escape from the bath halfway through 🚿😂 but by the end we were enjoying face scratches, treats and lots of fuss in the garden while waiting for his dad.

How handsome does Peter look after his tidy up 🤎.

Had a lovely trip to Alsager Market today to meet Scruffy Mutts Snack Shack and chat about incorporating their natural treats into our Calm Canine puppy welcome packs, as well as using them during grooms for positive reinforcement 🐾

As I’m starting out, it’s really important to me to make connections with local businesses and choose products I genuinely feel good about using, especially when it comes to what I’m giving to your dogs.

Because treats shouldn’t just be exciting, they should support your dog’s overall wellbeing too (although they do taste pretty great!)

George has, of course, taken his role as Chief Treat Tester very seriously… and approval has been given 👀🐶
