Mental Health Awareness Week 💚 11th May - 17th May

The Veterinary profession can be incredibly emotional and sadly Veterinary professionals are known to have one of the highest rates of mental health struggles and su***de. We pour our hearts and souls into caring for animals and supporting the people who love them. But behind the uniform, we are only human too. 🩺

Support is available and no one should ever struggle alone. Organisations such as Vetlife, Vets in Mind, Mind and Samaritans are there to offer help, support, and understanding to those who may need it.

This week we remind everyone to be kind, not only to ourselves but to others. It can make more of a difference than we realise. 🫶

“There is an awful smell coming from kennel 4”
“Do we still have powdered gloves?”
“Could you please quickly put this on a drip, draw some bloods, just that we have them… and, oh, I need you in 5 to vaccinate that litter of 10”
“I can’t find any e-swabs …. ah yes, I swear they were not there before …”
“Could you please triage this … ”
“This one just needs a quick blood and nail clip, can I leave it with you? She’s a bit spicy …”

… and that’s just from the Vets

There’s all the admins and discharges, regular injections, blood tests, stimulation tests, imaging, prescriptions, pre—and post-op messages and checks, anaesthesia, cuddling, caring and a lot of tidying and cleaning … to name a few.

How do they do it???

This week we highlight and celebrate our amazing Receptionists Carol, Sally, Cath, Wendy, Stacey, Charlotte, Hannah and Alex. 🥰

Being a Vet’s receptionist is so much more than ‘just’ answering the phones. Our amazing ladies are the first friendly smile when you first come in to the compassionate ‘let me get the door for you’ when you last leave. 🙏

….and everything in between: emails, drug orders, the phone, messages to Vets, filling up meds, re-stocking, phone again, attaching lab reports, advise about food, health care plans, insurance, take payments, being roped in to hold a dog or chicken…. oh here is the phone again, and don't forget to grab that mop. 📞🐶📝🧹

It’s Spring and we get a lot of requests for flea & tick prevention medicine. 🦟🪱

We just wanted to explain why we need to see your pets before we can give you any. As of January 2024, significant changes to Veterinary Medicines Regulations in the UK (enforced by the RCVS) mean that prescription flea, tick, and worm treatments (classified as POM-V) can only be dispensed if the pet has been physically examined by a Vet within the last 12 months. 🐶🐈‍⬛

This might seem excessive and almost like a punishment (sadly our Receptionists have heard a bit about ‘money grabbing’ on the phone) but think of it this way: 🤔

As Vets we are not only responsible for your animal’s health, we are also responsible for the environmental and subsequently YOUR (the human) health. 🏥

Your dog will shed some of the anti-parasitics through hair, urine, poops and swimming. The active ingredients, potent enough to help our pets stay parasite-free, and hence protecting your health, have been proven, in higher concentrations to not only be harmful to aquatic life but have also been reported to cause birth defects in birds who build their nests with some of the hair that we kindly leave out for them after brushing our dogs. Through water and soil, remnants of the active ingredients could even be found in grass and crops, and so the circle goes on! 🌾💦

So we are doing our bit! If you have not been in for your booster vaccination etc within the last 12 months, we will have to see your pet to tailor your flea/ tick / worm control for you. This is chargeable at a HALF CONSULTATION fee of £24. 👩‍⚕️🩺
