Some belated snaps from last week's tracking and trailing sessions. We had some pretty decent weather for it, and the dogs all smashed the activities set for them!

On Tuesday, Bella and Homer were joined by Declan, who thoroughly enjoyed his mantrailing introduction session. The experienced dogs worked on walking finds, an activity we haven't done for a few months with them. Three very happy and hard working dogs! 🥰

At weekend, Burt tackled a 1.5 hour aged track and also worked on a complex series of directional changes. Reuben began to learn how to transfer his existing skills to hard surface tracking. Fantastic to see his confidence growing throughout the session. Both dogs get full points for effort and did a super job 💜

Regardless of whether the dogs are tracking, or trailing, or both, it's clear they all absolutely love having a job to do, and take hunting down their rewards very seriously 🐶

As usual, the night pictures are a blurry mess. Roll on summer again 🤣

Saturday's scent detection dogs worked in a mix of different activities tailored to each of their levels and experiences, as well as their training goals.

First up, Betty undertook some indoor clove searches, whilst being observed by a visiting vet student who came to watch the dogs work for a day while on placement at the yard. This was a great step forward for Betty, who can be worried by new people, but she was very happy to accept a squeaky ball from the student as a post training reward! She then did a couple of scent discrimination exercises, which gave us a great new training goal for practising at home.

Next up, collies Millie and Kali enjoyed some outdoor searching in the paddock, and were super fast on locating their hides 💜 Meanwhile, we re-covered some of the basics with Myia, who'd gotten a little muddled about her indications due to doing a lot of practice on tracking indications... Not uncommon when working with multiple scent disciplines! By the end of the session she was showing that she clearly understood that it was the odour she needed to indicate on, and not the container.

Finally, former trailing dog Laiho had a 2 hour 121 scent session, where we looked at how to set up Kong finds, and the value of reward placements. He's not shown much interest in detection work in the past, preferring trailing and tracking, so it was great to see him so focused and engaged during the session. His mum and dad now have a brand new game to work on him with when he goes back home to Shetland 🏝️ 💜

On Saturday's tracking class we had the opportunity to set up something completely different for Burt - a 1.5hr aged track.

He'd done tracks aged up to around 45 mins before, but this was his first time doing something a little older.

It was fantastic to see him really slowing down and thinking about what the scent was doing after being out in the breezy Neighground environment for a while. He also aced his technical exercises, where we looked at scent article proximity behaviour.

We've had some fantastic tracking sessions this week! 🤩

On Monday we had our first dedicated Urban Tracking session, where teams Jude and Betty put their skills to work in a brand new environment. Betty hasn't done urban nosework before due to her nervousness around people, and Jude had only done urban mantrailing up to now... Absolutely amazing job from both dogs and their handlers! As well, blind dog Buddy came along to try his paw at a new skill, and quickly found a love of hunting down a person for a delicious reward 🥰

During the session we worked on a number on technical activities, including terrain changes, road crossings and tracking across large empty spaces. So proud of these teams!

On Saturday, Bear and Indie worked on some complex junctions during our usual Saturday tracking class, and both did a phenomenal job despite the very breezy conditions. Great to see so much focus and enthusiasm from them 😍

Can't wait to keep seeing these teams going from strength to strength 💪🏻

Yesterday's scent detection dogs worked with human contamination around their hides... And boy did it give some of them something to think about! 🤯

Throwing an occasional curve ball into the training plans can be the best way to highlight our areas for improvement and give us a new thing to focus on. We'll definitely be doing more of this in the near future! Fab effort from teams Betty, Boudie, Millie, Burt, Sassie and Kali, as always!

On the introduction workshop later, new dogs Harper and Ash, along with their humans, got a crash course on the basics of scentwork and did a fantastic job on their initial training. It's not easy to bring dogs into a brand new environment and have them work with only a short settling period, but these two were fantastic in the cabin and their tails didn't stop wagging the whole time.

Our next intake for new attendees will be at the end of September... Watch this space for the dates! 👀

The scent detection dogs spent August imprinting and looking for clove in a variety of different hides. We've searched walls, traffic cones, tyres, the open grass, and last week we created a bit of an obstacle course out of whatever I had in my van.

Lots of great learning opportunities for humans and dogs, as most were new to the odour of clove. Safe to say no mulled w**e will be safe from these hounds from now on 😁

Last week, Boudie, Kali, Myia, Sassie, Betty and Millie searched my "stuff"

The week before, Sassie, Betty and Boudie worked on walls, while Myia did some free searching in the Neighground.

The week before *that*, Jude, Burt, Indie and Bear were joined by some of Rochdale Dog Walking home boarders who chased down Kong in the paddock, and then Millie, Myia, Kali, and Inca practised among the equipment with clove.

Another picture dump as I've been rubbish at getting on Facebook this month... I promise September will be better! 🤞🏻

Because I've been rubbish at getting pics up lately, here's a bit of an info dump from our recent tracking and trailing sessions!

On Tuesday evening, Homer, Albie, Dougal, Bella and Cooper came out to play at a mix of urban\industrial trailing. We are definitely seeing earlier nights as autumn sets in!! Fantastic work from everyone, the dogs had a ton of fun and worked super hard.

On Saturday, Bear, Myia, Indie and Burt worked on some contaminated track exercises. It's great to be able to set up some technical elements in a private venue, and the teams absolutely aced it!

Last Tuesday, we made our way over to Clitheroe for trailing - first time working in such a busy environment for Burt, but his spaniel brain handled it excellently! In true Homer style, Homer did an absolutely paw perfect first trail... Then completely forgot what trailing is when he had to find his instructor 🤣 Bella was her usual fab self, no issues at all finding a new trail layer!

Last night's Tracking class gave us bright sun, and cool breezes which moved the scent around and made for an extra challenge for teams Burt and Betty.

The dogs worked on two exercises; match to sample, and contaminated tracks. Working in a 'clean' environment means it's easier to set up very specific component exercises like this, compared to somewhere more public that might see a lot more unwanted contamination that's outside of our control.

Both dogs showed a clear understanding of the session goal: take scent from the starting article, match it to the track leading away, and ignore the other tracks as they left the main one.

Superb handling from the humans, too. Know when to give more line and when to stay shorter is something that only comes with lots of practice and experience. Thanks for a great evening, teams! 😁

On Tuesday's trailing session, teams Homer, Myia, Bella and Duke worked on road crossings and terrain transitions, helping to tighten up their decisions when faced with changes on the trail.

Everyone did an excellent job, and it was great to see all the dogs working steadily and thinking about how to tackle the challenges they faced. Great work, all! 🥳

Saturday's weather made for some very interesting scent pictures for all the dogs across all three classes!

First up in Tracking, the wind made it very challenging for Bear and Indie to navigate their turns, resulting in some over-shooting as the dogs figured out just what the heck was going on. Longer tracks in the Neighground focused on junctions, surface changes and article indications, and they both nailed it! 💜

In Scent Detection, Burt and Betty worked on clove, first in the pipes, then in the wall, then hidden in dry grass. Burt had done clove before, and was on top form. After some initial confusion by Betty once we imprinted the odour, she quickly understood the new twist on a familiar game 🤩 Blustery weather with some drizzle added to the challenge

The final scent class was switched to a trailing session to give Millie and Kali the chance to play their favourite game despite the weather which had turned awfully wet by that point 🌧️ Super work from both collies 😍

Here's hoping to some nicer weather for this Saturday's classes 😬 Well done to all handlers for braving it last week!
