โ˜€๏ธ Keeping Horses Safe in Hot Weather ๐Ÿด

With temperatures rising, it's important to take extra care of your horses to help prevent heat stress and dehydration.

โœ… Provide plenty of fresh, clean water at all times
โœ… Add ice to water troughs or buckets to help keep water cool and encourage drinking
โœ… Try apple bobbing โ€“ floating chopped apples in water can make drinking more appealing for some horses
โœ… Ensure access to shade or well-ventilated shelter
โœ… Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day (typically 11amโ€“4pm)
โœ… Exercise early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler
โœ… Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of extreme heat, and if travel is essential, ensure good ventilation and frequent checks
โœ… Consider adding electrolytes if your horse is sweating heavily (seek veterinary advice if unsure)
โœ… Monitor for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness, or reluctance to move
โœ… Cool horses down effectively after exercise using cold water, and repeating until the horse is comfortable

โš ๏ธ Watch for signs of heat stress or heatstroke, including:
โ€ข Excessive or absent sweating
โ€ข Rapid breathing or increased heart rate
โ€ข Lethargy or weakness
โ€ข Stumbling or uncoordinated movement
โ€ข Reluctance to eat or drink

If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

Older horses, young foals, overweight horses, and those with underlying health conditions may be particularly vulnerable during hot weather.

๐ŸŒž Stay safe, stay cool, and help your horses beat the heat! If you have any concerns about your horse during the current warm spell, please don't hesitate to contact the practice for advice. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿšจ The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning, for 9am Wednesday 24 June - 9pm Thursday 25 June, as temperatures across the UK continue to rise. ๐Ÿšจ

Pet owners should take extra care to ensure their pets stay safe in the heat.

๐Ÿพ When walking your dog, remember the tarmac test: place the back of your hand on the ground for five seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

โ˜€๏ธ Other ways to help keep pets safe in the heat:
๐Ÿ’ง Ensure they always have access to fresh drinking water
๐Ÿ  Provide plenty of shade and cool areas to rest
๐Ÿš— Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time

If you're concerned that your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, contact your veterinary practice immediately.
