⭐️Limited Spaces!⭐️

This Sunday 31st May 🗓️

Sensory Sessions are available to book for you and your dog in the calm, safe space of the Alba Dogs Training Room 🐾

These are 1:1 ACE Free Work sessions, designed to give your dog time, space, and choice in an environment that supports regulation and wellbeing.

Each session lasts 45 minutes ⏱️

You are invited to bring your dog’s favourite treats, licking food, and a crunchy option to support their individual sensory experience 🍗🧀🥕

When you arrive, you come into the room first to gently set up your dog’s space. If your dog is unable to settle in the car, just get in touch beforehand so arrangements can be made to support you both.

Once everything is ready, your dog is invited in to explore at their own pace. There is no pressure to perform, no expectation to engage in a certain way—just opportunity.

They can move, pause, sniff, lick, explore, and choose what feels right for them in the moment. This helps support self-calming and lowers adrenaline in a safe and supported way.

The space is carefully designed to remove the pressures of the outside world—no other dogs approaching, no unexpected joggers or cyclists, no harsh weather conditions like heavy rain or strong sun ☁️🌧️☀️

Just time.

Time for your dog to experience the environment without interruption, to regulate, to decompress, and to enjoy low-impact sensory exploration using all their senses.

Afterwards, your dog can go home and rest, giving their nervous system time to process and settle.

Amber and Shammy went out together today for a lovely walk across mixed terrain 🌿

They moved through a variety of surfaces and scent stories — grass, paths, edges, and all the in-between spaces where information gathers and changes.

Amber had some off-lead time to explore freely, check in, and make her own choices about where her body and nose wanted to go 🐾
Shammy stayed on lead… not because he can’t cope, but because if he could choose total freedom, he’d be off on a solo adventure faster than you could say “where did he go?” 😄

With Shammy, it’s very much a case of:
“I’ll just follow this scent… and this one… and that one over there… goodbye for now!”
(Though you’d still hear his basset hound commentary echoing through the countryside 🎶)

On lead, he can still do what he does best — sniff, process, pause, and fully engage with the world at his own pace, just with a human attachment point keeping the adventure slightly more local.

Different dogs, different needs, same goal: choice, connection, and letting the nervous system settle through natural exploration 🌿

“ My dog gets a good hours walk 3 times a day.”

How often do we hear this said with pride, as though the length of a walk determines how good a dog guardian someone is? 🐾

But do our dogs really need hours and hours of physical exercise every single day… or is that a belief that has been passed down through generations of dog ownership?

Movement is important, absolutely. Dogs need opportunities to explore, sniff, move their bodies and experience the world around them. But just like us, they also need balance.

If we went to the gym intensely every single day without enough recovery, eventually our muscles would fatigue, our joints would struggle and our nervous system would become overwhelmed. The same can happen for dogs.

Over-exercising can place stress on growing joints, tired muscles and sensitive nervous systems. It can contribute to physical discomfort, increased adrenaline levels, frustration, poor sleep, emotional dysregulation and behavioural changes. A dog who appears “hyper” may actually be physically and emotionally exhausted.

Not every dog is built for long durations of exercise either. Age, breed, health, pain, genetics, emotional wellbeing and life experiences all play a part in what feels safe and comfortable for that individual dog.

Some dogs thrive with shorter, thoughtful walks that allow time to sniff, process and regulate. Some may benefit more from sensory activities, ACE Free Work, scentwork, gentle movement or simply resting safely beside you on the sofa 💛

When we think about children, they don’t spend all day running. They balance movement with quieter activities like reading, puzzles, games, creativity and rest. Dogs need that same balance too.

A walk should not just be about duration. It should be about quality.

A shorter walk in a quieter environment where your dog can sniff, decompress and feel emotionally safe may be far more beneficial than marching for miles while overwhelmed.

And if your dog attends scentwork, sensory sessions or ACE Free Work, remember they are already using enormous amounts of mental, emotional and sensory energy during those activities. They do not then need an additional hour-long walk before or after just to “burn energy off.”

Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is listen to what our dog is communicating instead of what society tells us dogs “should” need 🐶✨

Thor is quite the character in his Sensory Sessions… and he always brings his own style to the room 🐾

He likes to start by coming in on lead, supported by his guardian, gently orienting himself and beginning his exploration in a way that feels safe and steady. This opening phase gives him connection, co-regulation, and clarity before he moves into more independent choice-making.

Once he’s ready, Thor enjoys his licking stations being topped up with fresh food. Off lead now, he begins to explore at his own pace, checking in with the environment and choosing what feels good for him in the moment. Licking helps support regulation and can lower arousal, giving the nervous system time to settle.

Next comes one of his favourites… a puzzle toy filled with treats. For some dogs, problem-solving can increase excitement, but for Thor it has the opposite effect. It helps him focus, settle, and engage his brain in a calm, purposeful way 🧠✨

After that, he enjoys a crunchy biscuit before returning once more to his stations, this time back on lead with his guardian, bringing the session full circle with connection and support.

And then… Thor added his own twist last night 😄
A little bit of independent “bonus enrichment” when he very confidently helped himself to the scent pot from the wall (cow scent included!). A reminder that when dogs feel safe and engaged, they will often show us what they find most interesting in the environment!

Every dog experiences their Sensory Session differently. Some stay close, some explore wide, some seek food, some seek scent, and some, like Thor, like to rewrite the plan a little. All responses are information. All choices matter. All learning is valid 🐾

This is ACE Free Work in action: following the dog, not the agenda.
