🐾 THE REALITY OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL DOG WALKER 🐾
Dog walking can look like a simple job from the outside — “you just take dogs for a walk.” But there is so much more to it.
You’re responsible for the safety and wellbeing of somebody else’s beloved family member — often several at once.
And you do it whatever the British weather throws at you:
🌧️ Torrential rain
❄️ Freezing cold, ice and snow
☀️ Extreme summer heat
💨 Strong winds
🐾 Mud, puddles and everything in between
You have to remember water, adjust routes according to the weather, watch for hot pavements and constantly assess what’s safe for the dogs.
Then there’s the vehicle. It becomes a second workplace — muddy, wet, hairy and constantly needing cleaning. You have to fuel it, maintain it, secure the dogs properly and remember which dogs need separating because they don’t travel well together.
On the walk, you’re watching multiple dogs while keeping an eye on other dogs, roads, cyclists, horses, livestock and countless potential hazards.
And occasionally things go wrong.
A dog can become spooked and run off. A lead can fail. Dogs can have a disagreement or, rarely, a fight. Someone can get injured.
You have to stay calm and deal with it because someone else’s much-loved dog is your responsibility.
Then there’s the physical side.
Scratched legs from brambles and dogs jumping up, muddy clothes, wet shoes, bruises, aching feet and sore muscles. You’re walking for hours over uneven ground, carrying water and equipment and rarely getting a proper chance to sit down.
And behind the scenes there’s scheduling, messages, payments, keys, cleaning, insurance, equipment, vehicle maintenance and everything else involved in running a business.
It’s physically demanding, mentally demanding and sometimes genuinely stressful.
But there is another side to it. ❤️
You get to spend your working days outside, surrounded by dogs. You build genuine relationships with them, watch their personalities develop, give them adventures and enrichment, and know that you’re making a difference to their lives.
You get muddy, scratched, soaked, frozen and exhausted…
but you also get wagging tails, excited faces, unconditional love and a job that many people would dream of having. 🐶🌿
And honestly, that’s why we keep doing it. ❤️🐾
