Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Founded in 2008, our non-profit rescue centre saves neglected, abused and abandoned equines in Spain. We also welcome volunteers to work in the shops.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre was founded in 2008 by Sue and Rod Weeding. We are British expats who had moved to Spain from England in 2001 to enjoy an easy sunshine-and-relaxation retirement. But all that changed in 2008 with Luceiro, a two-year-old stallion we found locked in a filthy and dark stable, his left eye badly injured and rotting, hurling himself repeatedly against the bars of his

stall as flies drove him crazy. Unable to walk away from such a distressing case of animal cruelty, we brought Luceiro home to our own finca – and unwittingly created a much-needed horse rescue centre. We set up our Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre near the little town of Rojales in the province of Alicante, along Spain’s Costa Blanca coastline. We now care for more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect. We believe that when you love an animal, you fight to save it. They may be old crocks and broken down and disabled or whatever, but for the abuse they’ve suffered and survived, they deserve a second chance. We are determined to help push for the better treatment of animals in Spain and constantly lobby authorities to change laws and punish those who abuse animals. Learn about our many donation options, including one-off donations and horse sponsorships, here: www.easyhorsecare.net/donate

We also run a network of charity shops across the Alicante province. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Find out more here: http://easyhorsecare.net/shops/charity-shops

Every single cent donated or spent in our charity shops goes towards the hefty feeding and care costs of all our animals. Thank you for helping us gift these equines a second chance at life.

🌅 BREAKFAST IS SERVED… BUT IT’S NOT QUITE THAT SIMPLE! 🐴

An early morning at the rescue centre, and Bronson is flanked by his two friends as they wait patiently — or perhaps reasonably patiently — for breakfast.

With around 120 rescued animals to care for, feeding time is rather more complicated than filling a few buckets and shouting, “Come and get it!”

Every horse, pony and donkey is an individual. Age, condition, dental problems, previous injuries and ongoing health issues can all affect what and how much an animal needs to eat.

That means our forage team has quite a responsibility each morning. A whiteboard provides the all-important guide, showing what each field needs so that the correct forage goes to the correct animals. With so many fields and so many residents, relying on memory would be an excellent way of creating breakfast-related anarchy.

And forage is only part of the story.

Some of our older or more vulnerable horses are brought out of their fields separately for additional feeds with a higher nutritional value. Others need supplements or medication added to their feed, while changing health or weight can mean that diets have to be adjusted again.

It is a constantly evolving operation. The horses are monitored closely, changes are noticed and feeding plans are adapted accordingly.

For Bronson and his friends, however, the matter is considerably less complicated.

Behind this peaceful early-morning scene is a carefully organised daily routine — one of the many things happening quietly, seven days a week, to keep every rescued animal at Easy Horse Care as healthy and comfortable as possible.

🐴 COME AND MEET THE FACES BEHIND THE STORIES! 🐴

There is still plenty of summer left — and we would love to spend some of it showing more of you around Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. ☀️

A visit here is rather different from simply going somewhere to see horses.

During one of our guided tours, you will walk through the centre, meet some of our rescued horses, ponies and donkeys and hear the extraordinary stories behind them. Some arrived starving. Some were injured. Some had suffered years of neglect or mistreatment. Today, they are safe and will remain with us for the rest of their lives.

You will also discover what goes on behind the scenes to care for around 120 rescued animals and hear about the wider animal-welfare work that lies at the heart of everything we do.
And, of course, no two tours are ever quite the same. Our residents have an irritating habit of refusing to follow the script.

There may be unexpected interruptions, demands for attention and the occasional four-legged attempt to take over proceedings. 😂

Our tours are relaxed and friendly, normally starting at 12 noon and lasting around an hour and a half.

🎟️ Suggested donation:
€10 per adult
€5 per child under 14

Those donations matter enormously. Every tour helps us to share the message of animal welfare, but it also contributes directly towards the continuing cost of caring for the animals who call the centre home.

So, whether you live locally, have friends or family visiting, or are spending your summer here on the Costa Blanca, come and discover the rescue centre for yourself.

Please book in advance — Easy Horse Care is a busy working rescue centre, so visits are by guided tour rather than simply dropping in.

Our regular tours are in English, and we can also arrange our special “Spanglish” tours on selected dates, combining simple Spanish with English support.

Come for the horses.
Come for the stories.
Come to understand why rescue matters.

And by coming, you help us continue writing the next chapter. 🐴

🐴 THE SUPERVISORS HAVE ARRIVED…

A little while ago we showed you Rod explaining the new feeding machine he has been building for the centre. Well, construction is now complete and there was just the small matter of getting it into position.

Fortunately, Rod and our volunteers had help.
Meghan and April appointed themselves official project supervisors. 👀🐴

As Susan explains in the video, there was considerable interest in proceedings as the new machine made its journey across the centre. Meghan and April clearly felt that anything involving the word feeding required their immediate and very close attention.
Rod has built the machine largely from components he has sourced and adapted himself, with some valuable technical help from our vet Dorothea, whose own feeding system originally inspired the project.

Now comes the exciting bit — getting it installed, tested and seeing how it works in practice.

For the humans, it has involved planning, engineering, improvisation, lifting, pushing and quite a lot of hard work.

For Meghan and April, the assessment criteria appear rather simpler:
Does food come out of it?
When does food come out of it?
And why is food not coming out of it RIGHT NOW? 😂

More on our latest bit of home-grown EHCRC engineering soon… 🔧🐴❤️

🎨 A VERY SPECIAL DELIVERY ❤️

There are many ways to become part of the Easy Horse Care family.

Laia is one of our newer volunteers, originally from Czechia, and in a relatively short time she has already become a valued member of the team. Like all our volunteers, she gives something enormously precious to the centre — her time, her energy and her willingness to get stuck in wherever help is needed.

But this week, Laia arrived with something rather different.

Her young daughter had decided that she wanted to contribute something too, so she drew this beautiful picture of horses for the centre. Here is a very proud Laia presenting it to Susan.

It was an especially appropriate gift because Susan is herself a talented artist and knows rather a lot about the time, patience and love that goes into creating something by hand.

We talk a great deal about the international nature of our volunteer family. People arrive at Easy Horse Care from countries all over the world, bringing different languages, backgrounds and experiences with them. Yet somehow, once the wheelbarrows come out and the animals start demanding attention, those differences become rather unimportant.

And sometimes that connection travels home with them too.

So today we'd like to say thank you to Laia for everything she is already doing for us — and a very special thank you to a young artist from Czechia for thinking about the horses her mum is helping to care for.

Your picture has found a very appreciative home. ❤️🐴🎨

🎭 THE DAY AFTER THE SHOW… ✨

The roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd…

And now, as the last sequin drifts gently to the floor, the music has stopped, the costumes have been packed away and pulses have finally returned to something approaching normal, it's time to look back on what was a fantastic afternoon!

Yesterday's Around the World in Colour Fashion Show played to a packed hall, and what an atmosphere there was.

After all the planning, organising and rehearsing — not to mention those inevitable pre-show nerves — suddenly it was showtime.

The music started, our models took to the floor and everything that had been worked on behind the scenes came wonderfully to life.

There was colour. There was music. There was laughter. There was applause. There were some gloriously outrageous outfits. And, most importantly, there was a room full of people having a thoroughly good time while raising money for the animals at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

And raise money it certainly did. A very respectable sum was raised for the centre, every euro of which will help towards the continuing cost of caring for our rescued animals.

Events like this don't simply happen, though.

Behind the few hours everyone sees lies an enormous amount of unseen work: finding a venue, planning, organising, rehearsing, sorting clothes and costumes, arranging music and entertainment, selling tickets, preparing raffle prizes, setting everything up and then somehow making the whole complicated contraption run smoothly on the day.

So a huge thank you to everyone who organised, planned, rehearsed, modelled, performed, sold, served, donated, helped and generally rolled up their sleeves and made yesterday happen.

And an equally enormous thank you to everyone who came along. A show without an audience is merely a rather strangely dressed group of people wandering around to music. You brought the atmosphere, the applause and the generosity that made the afternoon such a success.

Fundraising is vital to Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. We may prefer not to manufacture crises or constantly rattle the virtual collection tin, but caring for more than a hundred rescued animals costs money every single day. Events like yesterday allow people to support that work while coming together, meeting friends and having a great time.

Yesterday you did all three.

To everyone involved, onstage, backstage and out front:
Thank you. What a show. What an audience. What an afternoon. ❤️

Now, somebody really ought to find that last sequin…

✨ The lights are almost up... ✨

After a week of rehearsals, outfit changes, music cues, last-minute adjustments and plenty of laughter, today is finally the day!

Behind every fashion show is a whirlwind of preparation. Models quietly practising their walks. Volunteers making sure every outfit is ready. Music being timed to perfection. The inevitable question, "Will everything come together?" And, of course... those pre-show butterflies that remind us we care.

But that's part of the magic of live performance.

In just a few hours, all that preparation will burst into life in a celebration of colour, creativity and community as we take you Around the World in Colour.

This isn't just a fashion show. It's an afternoon of entertainment, live music, fantastic raffle prizes and wonderful people coming together to support the rescued animals of Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

Every ticket, every raffle strip and every round of applause helps make a difference to the lives of the animals in our care.

So, if you've been thinking about coming, consider this your final call before the curtain rises.

🇪🇸 25 Years in Spain 🇪🇸

Twenty-five years ago today, Susan and Rod arrived in Spain complete with two dogs, a cat and a trailer full of building materials.

Waiting for them was a crumbling old finca that needed almost everything rebuilding.

What wasn't waiting for them was Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

There were no rescued horses. No donkeys. No pigs. No volunteers from around the world. No charity shops. No guided tours. No hundreds of thousands of people following the animals' stories online.

Just a dream of a new life in the Spanish sunshine... and a lot of very hard work.

Over the years, that little finca has grown into a sanctuary that has rescued and cared for hundreds of animals who had nowhere else to go. It has become a place where people from all over the world come to volunteer, learn, heal and make lifelong friendships. It has become home to animals whose stories have inspired countless others.

Looking back, it's extraordinary to think that none of it was planned.

Sometimes life writes a better story than we ever could.

Today we celebrate not just twenty-five years of living in Spain, but twenty-five years of perseverance, courage, kindness and saying "yes" to opportunities that could never have been imagined back in 2001.

To everyone who has been part of this journey—our volunteers, supporters, donors, visitors, staff, vets, farriers, neighbours and friends—thank you. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has grown because thousands of people have believed in the same simple idea: that every animal deserves compassion and a second chance.

Here's to the last 25 years.....and to whatever the next chapter brings.

❤️🇪🇸 Happy 25th anniversary, Susan and Rod. Spain has been lucky to have you, and so have the animals.

🎉 Eight New Teamers in One Week – Thank You! ❤️

Sometimes the biggest victories don't make the loudest noise.
This week, eight wonderful people have joined our Teaming family, taking just a couple of minutes to sign up and pledging to donate just €1 per month to help care for the rescued animals at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

To every one of our new Teamers...

Thank you.

You may only be giving the price of a cup of coffee every few weeks, but when hundreds of people do the same, it becomes something incredibly powerful.

At the moment, 116 people support us through Teaming.

Our next goal?

🎯 150 Teamers by the end of this year.

Can we do it? We honestly believe we can.

What exactly is Teaming?

Teaming is one of the simplest ways to support a charity.
✅ You donate just €1 each month.

That's all.

There are no hidden costs, no surprise payments and no commitment beyond your monthly euro.

We often hear the same questions...

"Is it difficult to set up?"
Not at all. It only takes a couple of minutes.

"Is it secure?"
Yes. Teaming has been supporting charities across Europe for many years using secure payment systems.

"Does Facebook or Meta take a percentage?"
No.
The donation goes through the Teaming platform, not Facebook.

"Does Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre receive the full €1?"
Yes. The full euro is passed on to the charity. Teaming itself is a non-profit foundation that operates through separate funding rather than taking a slice of your donation.

We don't often talk about money because we'd much rather share stories about our wonderful rescued animals.

But the reality is that caring for over a hundred rescued animals is only possible because people choose to help.

Every month brings feed bills, veterinary care, medication, farrier visits, maintenance, bedding and all the countless costs involved in giving these animals the second chance they deserve.

We never want to create drama or crisis. Instead, we'd much rather build something steady, reliable and sustainable—and Teaming is one of the very best ways to do exactly that.

One euro.
One person.
One rescued life after another.

If you've ever thought, "I'd love to help, but I can't afford much," then Teaming was created for exactly that reason.

❤️ Will you help us reach 150 Teamers before the end of the year?

Join our Teaming family here:
https://www.teaming.net/easyhorsecarerescuecentre

Together, one euro at a time, we're changing lives.

Thank you to our eight newest Teamers—and to every single person who already stands alongside us. You are all part of every rescue, every recovery and every happy ending.

Sometimes one photograph says everything.

There are no staged poses here.

Just one of our wonderful volunteers, Mel, sharing a quiet moment with one of our donkeys after another morning's work.

Look closely at her smile.

That is why people volunteer.

Of course they come to help the animals. They muck out stables, clean fields, prepare forage, sort donations in our charity shops, welcome visitors and tackle countless jobs that need doing every single day.

But something else happens too.

Friendships are formed.

Confidence grows.

Stress melts away.

People from different countries and different walks of life discover a shared purpose, working side by side for animals that ask for nothing more than kindness.

Whether someone gives three hours a week in one of our charity shops or spends several months as a residential volunteer at the rescue centre, every volunteer becomes part of the Easy Horse Care family.

The animals benefit enormously from their dedication.
So do Susan and Rod.

And, judging by the smiles we see every day, our volunteers gain something rather special in return.

To every volunteer past and present—whether at the rescue centre, in our shops, behind the scenes, or helping at events—thank you.

You don't do it for applause.

You do it because you care.

And because of that, over one hundred rescued animals wake up every morning in safety, surrounded by people who genuinely want them to have the best life possible.

Thank you for being part of something extraordinary. ❤️🐴

🩻 Magic's Turn Under the X-ray Machine

Following Zac's examination, it was Magic's turn to meet Dorothea and her portable X-ray machine.

Magic is one of those horses who reminds us that rescue is rarely about finding a single problem. As our animals grow older, many carry the lasting effects of the lives they endured before arriving at the centre.

The X-rays confirmed what we already knew in part. Magic has arthritis in her back legs, which explains some of the stiffness she experiences. She also has several dental problems. Ordinarily, some of these teeth would be removed, but in Magic's case the situation isn't so straightforward. They have become so fragile that attempting treatment could cause others to loosen or fall out.

So, as with many of our older residents, the question isn't simply, "What can we do?" It's also, "What should we do?"

That balance is at the heart of good rescue work.

Every decision Susan, Rod and Dorothea make is guided by one aim: keeping Magic comfortable, as pain-free as possible, and enjoying the best quality of life for as long as she can.

And judging by her daily antics, she's determined to enjoy every minute!

Despite her arthritis, Magic and her inseparable friend Nelson still patrol the lanes of the rescue centre every morning. Nelson may be blind, and Magic has only one eye, but together they're an unstoppable team. They race around the centre with all the enthusiasm of a pair of unruly teenagers who haven't realised they're supposed to be growing old.

It's enough to make everyone smile.

Veterinary visits, X-rays, medication and ongoing care are all part of looking after more than 100 rescued animals, and they contribute to the centre's monthly running costs of over €12,000.

💛 If you'd like to help, one of the simplest ways is by joining our Teaming group. For just €1 per month, you can help provide lifelong care for animals like Magic.

https://www.teaming.net/easyhorsecarerescuecentre

Thank you for helping us ensure that growing older doesn't mean growing forgotten.
