⚠️ A quick word about rat poison ⚠️
I know rats are a pain in the arse. No one wants them in or near their house. But throwing poison down isn't quite the simple solution it might seem.
A lot of rat poisons work by stopping blood from clotting, meaning the rat can take days to die....yes DAYS. During that time, it becomes weak and vulnerable to predators.
And here's the problem…
Your dog doesn't have to eat the poison to be affected.
They can eat (or just bite) a poisoned rat.
So can an owl, hawk, fox or cat.
Suddenly, the poison you put down for one rat has potentially become a problem for everything further up the food chain.
And yes, dogs can absolutely find and eat the bait themselves. It's designed to be attractive to animals. 🤦♀️
So what can you do instead?
🐀 Find and block entry points, rats won't chew through wire wool.
🍎 Clear up fallen fruit and food sources.
🥣 Don't leave pet food outside.
🗑️ Keep rubbish and food securely stored.
🔧 If you need professional help, look for pest control that focuses on rodent-proofing and uses instant-kill snap traps, rather than putting poison down.
And if you think your dog has eaten rat poison or a potentially poisoned rat, contact your vet immediately. Don't wait for symptoms.
I'm not saying you have to become best friends with the rats. 😂
Just think about the bigger picture before reaching for the poison.
Because it's not only the rat that can pay the price. 🐀🦉🦊🐕
