Love your heels just the way they are ❤️

Happy to report that after the initial ‘that’s not my daughter’ moments 🤦🏽‍♀️ Faith and Amira are spending a lot of time together ❤️

Never judge a book by its cover and certainly never judge a hoof from one photo…

Caudal health is a big player in heel height…

The health of the soft tissue is most important…

Heels need months and years to fully be ready to relax to baseline, where Mother Nature intended…

While I won’t trim to measurements I’ve been contacted by many who have been advised to do so…

Yet it’s clear to me that the heels aren’t high at all…

They are healing and are in perfect balance for the stage of soft tissue recovery their in ❤️‍🩹

Instead of battling the heals down I believe we should focus more on the tiny details and nuances of the hoof and balance 🫶🏽

It always speaks the truth!

Drop your coronary bands in the comments 👇🏼

Even when I think my trimming is 🫶🏽 the coronary shows me where improvement can be made…

It can literally rise or settle when I return the hoof to the ground…

It keeps my awake and learning…

What is your coronary band saying? ❤️

My ponies are the luckiest! At La Sonrisa - Coaching with horses they now have not one but two! misting areas …. and now I can trim 5 horse’s comfortably too 😜

It occurred to me a while back that while I was focusing on heel height…

I didn’t take account for the angle that the heel tubules were meeting the ground 🤔

Online I’m seeing many hooves that have also had a trim with focus on heel height…

These hooves all have heel angles shallower than the dorsal wall…

The heels having to grow quicker than the toe seemingly because at this shallower angle they need to grow more quickly to achieve balance with the dorsal wall…

This hoof has been lovingly trimmed by his owner and she has achieved some fantastic results in just over a month ❤️

When I let go of the reins, balanced correctly, and just let the heels be the height they chose to settle at… 😌

Thrush disappeared and heels stopped collapsing 🙌

Heels stopped growing at break-neck speed 🙌

Healthier heels means less deviation in wall growth 🙌

The best part is that the heels are finally hitting those healthy measurements all by themselves 🙌

And much more 😉

It’s so rewarding to only need float my rasp around the hoof … especially with the hard hooves in 🇪🇸 😌

It will likely to take years for the soft tissue to fully rebalance and heal but I finally feel like I’m on the right track with this girl 🥰

Another perspective is never a bad thing! 👀

Collaboration with others grows you…

Read, observe, listen, grow 🌷

You don’t have to agree with anyone 100%…

You can decide what sits well with you and what doesn’t…

No one is 100% right 100% of the time…

Well except the horse that is 😉 ❤️

If you do battle with the heels you will likely lose…

When I trimmed with my focus on heel height I saw distortion, crazy heel and bar growth, contraction and …

Toe landing!

The softer shock absorbing tissues are towards the back of the hoof yet I was seeing quite a few toe landings 🤦🏽‍♀️

When you force the heel down before it’s ready…

And force the horse into toe landing…

In my mind…

You’re heading towards toe pressure and serious restriction of blood flow to the pedal bone…

Serious un fixable damage to the pedal bone…

Plus serious damage to every joint and muscle of the horse 😢

Waiting for the heels to repair and be ready doesn’t mean we don’t see progress…

We can still make meaningful progress and for me the bonus of letting the hoof guide us is…

That we will probably see less issues and a more comfortable horse 5 years down the line 🙏🏻 ❤️‍🩹

So record your horse walking with the camera on the ground…

Slow and look frame by frame…

Wait for that moment of ground contact…

What’s hitting the ground first? 🤔

Tara 💕

Ps. I love the way the light is hitting this hoof, don’t you? 😜
