Humans love to theorise, research, assume, test, control, apply…

We love to be right and make decisions for horses based on ‘X’…

I should know 🤦🏽‍♀️

None of us are wrong, in my mind, we are all ‘doing’ what we know / believe 🫶🏽

The thing I’m seeing is that I was mostly missing a trick or 10…

The hoof pre-trim is such a valuable chance for learning…

A chance to see how the hoof feels and what it needs…

Again this can be mis-read and subjective when human intelligence starts to override…

Regardless, the hoof is such a finely balanced self-righting machine that nothing is ‘just how it is’…

Every over-grown bar

Every crazy heel growth

Every layer of sole that won’t give

Every quarter that stands high

Every contracted frog

Every curling heel buttress

Every lump in the sole

It’s all there for a reason that only the hoof can truly KNOW fully…

That’s the knowledge we want to be chasing in my mind…

That comes from listening to the hoof and of course the horse ❤️‍🩹

All 3 horses in the post were first trimmed to a theory concocted by human intelligence 🥺

Now being rehabbed (a few months in) by listening more closely to hoof intelligence 🫶🏽

Beyond proud of this owner who I have been assisting remotely 🫶🏽

Balance was missed when the focus was solely on heel height…

The sole and hoof’s natural perimeters were being ignored…

This hoof and the 11 others at her yard began to elongate and pinch at the heel…

Luckily she documented everything recognising what was happening and how her horses were feeling about it…

She took it into her own hands to make changes to their hoofcare 🏆

There is plenty of healing to be done still but let’s applaud these changes over the last few months 👏🏼 🫶🏽

When I first met Faith back in April I honestly was concerned that there was something wrong… 🥴

At 6 years old I didn’t expect her to look so weak and I knew I could be taking on a long term issue… 🤦🏽‍♀️

I joke that it felt like if I sat on her she would fall over 😅

Look at her now! Blossoming from the moment she stepped in her new home… 🌷

24/7 meadow hay, herbs, friends, freedom and love has done the world of good and now she looks more like a 6 year old ❤️

Despite being on the edge of the mountain she was ready to let go of a little tension in her hips…

Feeling tension release in minutes or even moments reinforces my belief that your horse is the absolute best body worker for themselves…

Only their complex and finely tuned internal systems know the best and safest way to unravel tension ❤️

This is not about spying on your farrier or judging them or their work…

At the end of the day, professionals are doing what they believe to be the best for your horse and so this is not about blame…

This is about taking accountability for your horse and his hooves ❤️

You notice changes in your horse’s weight, skin, appetite, behaviour…

However hooves can be an oversight and yet are often connected to the issues above 👆🏼

I saw this pony back in April 2025 and noted how balanced his hooves looked and there wasn’t much for me to do…

I only trimmed once as the owner chose to continue with the previous trimmer for this pony…

6 months later in October 2025… 😮 his hoof balance was so far out …

Nothing had changed in diet or environment, this pony has a fantastic amount of natural movement…

April and October photos are the same amount of weeks post trim so these are not just an overgrown hooves…

This pony was suddenly in the danger zone ⚠️

The biggest challenge in the journey of keeping your horse healthy is human error…

NONE of us are capable of creating a wHolistic balance which is equal to a horse in balance with his natural environment…

FACT.

Me included unfortunately!

However horse care knowledge is constantly evolving…

And by following horse guidance, expanding our knowledge of the horse, and following our own intuition we can come closer and closer to wHolistic balance of the whole horse…

It’s up to YOU to notice changes in your horse’s hooves and share any concerns with your hoof care provider in a loving way ❤️

And you ARE allowed to ask questions…

And you ARE allowed to decide whether you are happy with their replies…

And you ARE allowed to follow your intuition…

However, make sure that your intuition also connects with a little knowledge too…

You don’t need to become a hoof expert but you will need to educate yourself a little because…

Well…
