The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) offers a three-year residency designed to develop confident, highly skilled specialists through an outstanding combination of clinical experience, structured academic teaching and dedicated preparation for board examinations.

A comprehensive theoretical training programme

Dedicated time for board preparation

Develop your skills in managing routine and complex anaesthetic cases across a wide range of species and clinical disciplines, working alongside specialists throughout the RVC.

Applications from highly motivated and ambitious colleagues are invited to undertake a Residency Training Programme in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, commencing in February 2027.

Willows’ Anaesthesia team provides a comprehensive anaesthesia and analgesia service to referral patients from practices across the UK. Willows is a truly multi-disciplinary centre with Specialists across Soft Tissue Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Internal Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Clinical Nutrition, Dentistry, ECC and Exotics

Facilities at Willows are second to none, including:

• State of the art anaesthetic monitoring equipment
• Dedicated anaesthesia ultrasound machine
• Pain clinic, Electro-acupuncture and K-laser machines
• Extensive imaging facilities including 1.5T MRI, 64 slice Siemens CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray, fluoroscopy and endoscopy
• In-house laboratory
• Dedicated ECC specialist-run intensive care unit
• Dedicated recovery ward
• Varied surgical case load including thoracoscopy and laparoscopy, craniotomy, cardiac surgeries, and intrahepatic liver shunts
• Interventional cardiology, radiology and endoscopic procedures
• True multi-disciplinary support for challenging cases
• Access to further expertise within the Linnaeus network

The anaesthesia team currently consists of three ECVAA/ACVAA diplomates, two clinicians, two residents and two anaesthesia nurses (both VTS anesthesia). The team have broad clinical experience with particular interests in anaesthesia for the critically ill patient, cardiac interventional procedures and ultrasound guided local blocks.

This is a three-year standard European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) residency, designed to prepare the successful candidate for the ECVAA examinations. A major portion of the three-year programme will be spent on clinical rotations in small animal anaesthesia and analgesia on site, but externships in ECVAA training centres or satellite training centres for large animal will also be required. This full-time post will run from Feb 2027. There is a shared 1 in 3 out of hours rota under a senior clinician’s supervision.

Applicants should be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to practice in the United Kingdom and should have graduated from an institution that has been approved by the European Association of Veterinary Education Establishments (EAVEE). A minimum of one year in primary care practice and completion of a rotating internship or equivalent is mandatory. A thorough knowledge of both conversational and medical English is essential.

Convocatoria de dos internados en anestesia en Hospital Veterinario Complutense, de Madrid.

El próximo mes de diciembre finalizarán su periodo de formación dos internos del Servicio de Anestesia del Hospital Clínico Veterinario Complutense, de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM).

Por este motivo, está prevista la incorporación de dos nuevos veterinarios interesados en continuar su formación especializada en anestesia y analgesia veterinarias.

🩺 Una excelente oportunidad para adquirir experiencia clínica, trabajar junto a especialistas y seguir desarrollando conocimientos y habilidades en nuestra disciplina.

Hoy, en el aniversario de su fallecimiento, recordamos con especial cariño y profunda admiración a Nacho Cruz, nuestro primer presidente y uno de los pioneros de la anestesia veterinaria en España.

Su pasión por nuestra especialidad, su visión y su compromiso con el desarrollo de la anestesiología veterinaria abrieron caminos que hoy seguimos recorriendo.

Su legado permanece vivo en nuestra sociedad y en todos los que compartimos su pasión por la anestesia veterinaria.

Como reconocimiento a su extraordinaria contribución, el máximo galardón que concede la SEAAV lleva su nombre, manteniendo vivo su recuerdo e inspirando a las nuevas generaciones de anestesistas veterinarios.

Acaba el Autumn Meeting 2026 de la Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists en Tesalónica, Grecia, con una participación española más que destacada.
Nuestros socios han presentado 7 comunicaciones orales y 10 pósters, y nuestra amiga Elena Parra, del The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) ha ganado el premio a la mejor comunicación.

Mejorar la analgesia tras la esterilización: nuevas evidencias sobre el bloqueo del cuadrado lumbar 🐶💉🩺

Un nuevo artículo en Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia compara dos técnicas con bupivacaína en 74 perras sometidas a ovariohisterectomía: el bloqueo del cuadrado lumbar guiado por ecografía y la administración del anestésico local dentro de la cavidad abdominal.

El grupo que recibió el bloqueo necesitó menos dosis de metadona de rescate durante las primeras ocho horas después de la cirugía: 11 dosis en total, frente a 21 en el otro grupo, con una diferencia estadísticamente significativa.

El estudio se realizó con cirugías efectuadas por estudiantes bajo supervisión y ambas técnicas formaron parte de un protocolo de analgesia multimodal. Los resultados apoyan la utilidad de la anestesia locorregional para reducir las necesidades de opioides, especialmente en este contexto docente.
