On March 20, 2005, Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester was riding with the Kentucky National Guard's 617th Military Police Company when roughly 50 insurgents ambushed a supply convoy near Salman Pak, Iraq.
The attack came with ri**es, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.
Hester and her squad didn't simply defend their position. They counterattacked.
Working alongside squad leader Staff Sgt. Timothy Nein, Hester moved through the kill zone, helped establish a flanking position and assaulted enemy trenches using grenades, M203 rounds and her M4 carbine. Army records credit Hester with killing three insurgents.
After roughly 45 minutes of fighting, the ambush had been defeated. Twenty-seven insurgents were killed, six wounded and one captured. U.S. soldiers were wounded, but the 617th suffered no deaths.
For her actions, Hester received the Silver Star.
At just 23, she became the first American woman since World War II to receive it and the first woman ever awarded the medal for direct action against an enemy
