‼️ Important Information ‼️
This is exactly why having your horse's hygiene treatment carried out regularly by an experienced professional is so important.
When I treated Amigo, his owner wasn't there as a lovely friend had kindly offered to hold him for her. As I was cleaning him, I could tell something just wasn't right. He was uncomfortable, and what I found felt very abnormal. The lesions were easy to feel, and his discomfort was obvious. I knew this was something that needed a veterinary opinion.
I finished the treatment as comfortably as I could so the vet would be able to properly examine the area afterwards. I then asked if we could call the owner because I really wanted to discuss what I'd found.
During our conversation, she told me she'd actually had concerns for a while. Five months earlier, Amigo had been seen by another hygiene practitioner and was told everything was normal and that he was simply a dirty boy who needed cleaning more often.
That really highlights why recognising abnormalities is such an important part of this job. It's not just about carrying out the treatment – it's about knowing what looks normal, what doesn't, and when it's time to involve a vet.
Over the years I've been incredibly lucky to learn from some amazing people, starting my training with Allie at The Horsebox Spa, becoming a member of the British Equine Hygienists Association, completing ongoing CPD, and, of course, treating thousands of horses across the UK and Spain. Every horse teaches you something, and that experience is invaluable.
It's upsetting to think that, if something abnormal was already present months ago, Amigo may have been able to receive veterinary attention sooner. I truly hope he makes a full recovery, and I'll keep everyone updated as I hear more from Kellie.
Please, please, please... don't just look at social media followers or fancy videos when choosing someone to treat your horse. Ask about their training, qualifications, insurance and experience, and make sure they're confident in recognising when a horse needs veterinary attention.
Our job is so much more than cleaning! 💚💙
