Animal Welfare of Luxor - AWOL. AWOL is a charity registered in Egypt and England providing free veterinary care for animals of the poor agricultural west bank communities in Luxor.

AWOL is a UK registered charity (1124154) which provides free veterinary care and animal welfare for animals in the poor farming communities on the west bank in Luxor. AWOL also aims to improve the welfare of animals through education of their owners and their children. Many of the animals treated are working animals and provide the only means of making a living for the people of this impoverished area. The charity is entirely reliant on donations and is run by English trustees and Egyptian/English management in Luxor and in the UK. This page is not monitored 24/7. If you have any concerns about an animal on Luxor's west bank please call 01002952215.. For general information please contact UK Managing Trustee Angela on [email protected]

Out in the rural villages there seems to be a never-ending supply of working donkeys to benefit from our help. All treated for worms or mange and nose chains covered or replaced with free soft head collars. Little things that make a big difference to the lives of these poor hard-working, unappreciated, and often mistreated animals.

Some people might find these photos upsetting but unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence at the AWOL centre.

This poor dog had rope embedded so tightly in his neck his face had swollen up and his neck was in a very bad way. After the rope was cut off the neck was cleaned up and treatment given. He is staying at the AWOL centre for intensive care. He is not in a good way but we will do everything we can to save him.

Facebook doesn't like these photos so will undoubtedly suspend recommendation of our page to potential supporters as it does regularly when we show unpleasant cases. Please help to circumvent this by sharing our posts. Our ability to help these poor animals depends on our supporters. We are a small independent charity and receive no government funding.

This lovely horse was brought in by local resident Pia who has recently bought her. She has a number of wounds and is generally in poor condition. After a refreshing shower her wounds have been treated and she has received multivitamins and worming treatment. The mare is staying at the AWOL centre to continue her recovery until she can go home to her new owner who will take better care of her. We'd like to thank Pia for her donation towards her treatment and our work.

We see hundreds of working donkeys every month at the AWOL centre. These two were treated for worms and also had nice comfortable head collars fitted. The head collars are made at the AWOL centre by our wonderful sewing machinist Gergis (pictured) and are free to any donkeys that needs them.

This beautiful girl came in suffering from a fungal skin problem. She was treated with anti-fungal and anti-parasitic medication and also given multivitamins and immuno support to give her a boost as she has recently had puppies. With regular treatment and care at home she should make a full recovery. She and her puppies were given a full checkup as well.

We picked this lovely friendly street dog up in one of our mobile clinics and brought him back to the AWOL centre for neutering. Dr Aya carried out the surgery accompanied by veterinary students Rawan and Yosr. After recovery he received his rabies vaccine before going back to his street home with some food.
