We’ve traditionally preferred to schedule OPU between a mare’s oestrous periods.

Why?

Because mares often have fewer follicles during oestrus, which can mean fewer oocytes to retrieve.

But new research presented in Kentucky is challenging the idea that more follicles is always better 🧐

The research suggests that follicle size may be linked to the developmental potential of the oocyte. So while a mare in oestrus may have fewer follicles, the oocytes we retrieve may have greater developmental potential 💡

This gives us a new perspective on how we look at OPU timing.

Where we previously might have been more hesitant about OPU during oestrus, we’re now looking at the situation differently.

During ICSI, just one s***m cell is selected and injected directly into the oocyte.

Because we select the s***m cell ourselves, we use several selection steps to mimic some of the natural selection that would normally take place in the mare’s reproductive tract.

The goal? To select the best possible candidate for fertilization 🔬🐎
