What a day on 'the island'.
We have spent the day on Tunø in the most magnificent weather. Full sun, no winter and good temperatures.
The task was mainly to exchange the colonies, so that the queens of the drone line for coming season are in place before the winter. The climate is milder and more stable on the island, and the wintering of the colonies here is almost 100% every year. So this way we ensure that the colonies, who produces the drones are in good shape from the early spring and no disturbance is made in relation to the drones in spring.
The drone line next season will be the line 167 of Caucasian origin. It's a fairly old line, with good stability and uniformity. It's hardy bees, who are easy to handle, and who are good at taking care of themself, which is a trait I appreciate more and more.
A little tidying up was done at the same time, in the shape of trimming the grass and cutting back the wildly growing brambles, who every summer threatens us with taking over the whole place.
When the serious part of the day was done, we spoiled ourselves with a hike around the island, and a really nice lunch at the local restaurant.
What a lovely day☺️
