Most people completely underestimate dwarf crayfish.

Save this post, here’s why dwarf crayfish are the most underrated aquarium animals.

Everyone keeps shrimp, but did you know dwarf crayfish each have their own personality? ❤️

They can be bold and cheeky. When you walk past the tank, they threaten you with claws.

Sometimes you put your finger in the water they’re not afraid of your hand. They attack and defend their territory.

Taming them is awesome. With regular feeding, they get used to you. Some become so tame you can feed them with tweezers.

Breeding them is awesome. They breed super easily in freshwater. Animals mate fully developed babies hatch. No larval stage.

Breeders are always in demand. Dwarf crayfish are super rarely bred. We’re always looking for breeders. If you have offspring, you can finance your hobby a bit.

20 liters is enough. Smallest species grow to only 2 cm.

They don’t eat plants. Perfect for planted aquariums.

They eat planarians and pests. They keep your tank free from pests.

No heater needed. Room temperature is fine.

No cold phase needed. No winter stress.

Why dwarf crayfish are so awesome:

1 They belong to the smallest crayfish in the world.
2 Cambarellus are small, only 2.5-4 cm in length.
3 Color can change depending on the environment.
4 They come from North & Central America.
5 They thrive in medium to hard water.
6 Not strictly nocturnal, can be seen during the day too.
7 Some get so tame you can feed them with tweezers.
8 Feed NatureHolic Cambarellusfeed and breed well.

Could dwarf crayfish be the better shrimp?

Have you ever kept them or are you still thinking about it?

Save this and use my 15 years of experience 🦞

1. Mothers actively protect their young through several developmental stages

2. Juveniles are independent at night, but gather back under mom by day

3. Cherax pairs are surprisingly calm, they sit close in one cave instead of fighting

4. Juveniles molt several times UNDER mom’s tail brood care is tighter than you think

5. Sexing: flip them – female openings at 3rd leg pair, male at 5th. Males show „claw blisters“

6. Up to 4x breeding per year, but egg counts are often lower than people think

7. Juveniles are cannibals AND need fine hiding spots – leaves, tubes, fine substrate

8. Shrimp fine with adults, juveniles hunt them if protein-starved

9. Some species stay peaceful with shrimp and fish – with enough food and structure

10. From Papua, Indonesia, Australia & New Zealand

11. They want warmth never below 10 °C, They die!

12. Some thrive in hard water despite soft origins adaptability is the real story

13. Mostly nocturnal, but settled ones come out by day for food

14. Some get so tame you can feed them with tweezers

15. Too much light makes Cherax insecure dimmed beats bright

16. One hiding spot more than crayfish caves and tubes reduce stress

17. Plants get eaten. Floor area > height

18. Tank: 80 cm for small Papua types, 240 L+ for big ones

19. Escaped? Don’t drop back in revive slowly in shallow tilted water

20. They dig hard! put acrylic under heavy stones to protect the glass

21. NEVER mix with American crayfish – plague kills 100% of Cherax

22. Pathogen survives 6 weeks in water, even a damp net transmits it

23. Crabs and macrobrachium kill even big crayfish after molting

24. Leave them alone during/after molting – „butter crayfish“, vulnerable for hours

25. They pull 90% of shell minerals from water, 10% from gastroliths

26. Adult Papua species: too much protein = molting issues + early death

27. Young ones are carnivorous – only fish/inverts, no warm-blooded meat

28. Siphon out uneaten dry food – pollutes water fast

29. Autumn leaves (beech, oak), nettle and dandelion get eaten in huge amounts

After 15 years of keeping shrimp, here are 30 things every beginner should know about Neocaridina 🦐 (save this!)

1. Only 2 species really matter: Neocaridina davidi & palmata
2. N. davidi used to be called heteropoda – same shrimp
3. Perfect for beginners: hardy, adaptable, prolific breeders
4. Size: 1.5–2.5 cm, females larger than males
5. „Big Mamas“ over 3 cm are always females – often infertile
6. Lifespan: max 2 years
7. Cooler water = longer life (slower metabolism)
8. pH: 6–8.5 – very tolerant
9. They do NOT like soft water
10. GH: 5–20 °dGH optimal, higher hardness is fine
11. KH: 2–16 °dKH
12. Aim for a conductivity of 300–800 µS
13. Temperature: 18–25 °C optimal, up to 30 °C with good filtration
14. Too cold = breeding can stop
15. Raise water hardness gradually – otherwise molting problems
16. Can be kept from 10 liters BUT bigger is better
17. Dark substrate = richer colors (scientifically confirmed)
18. Plant heavily – they even thrive in fertilized aquascapes
19. Sensitive to pesticides & medications in the water
20. Use in-vitro plants – free of germs & pests
21. Planaria are a real threat
22. Easy to keep with peaceful fish
23. Offer lots of hiding spots – juveniles love moss
24. They’re detritivores: eat detritus, dead matter, biofilm
25. Biofilm = excellent protein source
26. They will NOT eat coarse thread algae
27. Protein deficiency = they’ll go after baby snails
28. Supplement with leaves, zucchini, pumpkin, nettle, dandelion
29. Only feed what they eat within hours (except leaves)
30. Females carry few, large eggs – fully formed mini shrimp hatch
