When a routine paddock visit takes an unexpected turn 🚨

What started as a routine paddock visit quickly became an emergency when a horse suffered a wound from a fence hazard in a place no one expected the horse to reach. The team at Paton & Martin was on hand to assess and treat the injury. With Dr Javier Martinez overseeing the case, interns Tiana Pavan and Marilyn Mullan-Fraser were involved in assessing and suturing the wound, gaining valuable practical experience while ensuring the horse received the best possible care. 🩺

🔎 A simple check can make a big difference. Even familiar paddocks and stables can hold unexpected risks, which is why regular inspections are so important in helping prevent avoidable injuries. 🐴

Pure focus & attention 🐴

During surgery on the six-year-old gelding Bellico at Pferdeklinik am Kottenforst, the team not only performed a fetlock annular ligament procedure, but also removed a sarcoid at the same time.

For the removal of this sarcoid, the team chose a laser surgery procedure. The laser enables precise removal of the affected tissue while also helping to treat the surrounding area, where small satellite cells may remain. This can lower the risk of the sarcoid returning compared to traditional removal with a scalpel. Another benefit of laser surgery is that the wound can often be left open, allowing natural healing and supporting a smooth recovery. 🐴✨

Restoring vision with a lens implant 👁️

When a cataract threatens a horse’s vision, advanced surgery can make all the difference.

A cataract is an opacity of the eye’s lens that can impair a horse’s vision. 🐴 While some cataracts are present from birth, others develop following trauma or chronic inflammation. Depending on their severity, they can significantly impair a horse’s vision and ability to perform.

The only treatment that can restore vision is phacoemulsification, a highly specialised surgical procedure requiring advanced ophthalmic equipment, expert surgical skills and carefully managed anaesthesia. 👩‍⚕️

At Scone Equine Group, Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery Dr Jessica Partlow and Consultant veterinary ophthalmology specialist Dr Matt Annear perform this advanced procedure, helping horses regain their vision and get back to enjoying life to the fullest. 🙏

The Altano Basic Equine Arthroscopy Course returns on 23–24 October 2026 at the Arthrex Centre in Munich, Germany, offering an intensive two-day programme designed to build confidence in essential arthroscopic techniques.

Participants can look forward to a balanced combination of theoretical sessions, practical wet labs and case-based discussions covering topics such as joint arthroscopy, tenoscopy, arthroscopy instrumentation and the management of complications. Throughout the course, you'll learn directly from an experienced international faculty and benefit from valuable peer-to-peer exchange.

With only 18 participant places available, the course provides a unique opportunity for focused, practical training in a small-group setting.

Saving Mare & Foal 🐴

A pregnant thoroughbred mare was referred to Avenel Equine Hospital, part of the Altano Group, with signs of acute colic. Initial examination and ultrasound revealed dilated loops of small intestine. Despite medical treatment, her pain continued to increase, making exploratory surgery necessary.

During surgery, a severely damaged section of the small intestine was identified, removed, and the healthy ends were successfully reconnected. 🙏

Following surgery, the mare recovered well and quickly resumed eating and passing manure without post-operative complications. Serial foetal ultrasound examinations confirmed that both the foal and placenta remained healthy throughout her recovery.

Just five days after surgery, the mare was discharged to continue her rehabilitation at home. Today, both mare and her unborn foal continue to do well. 🧡
