More than a job. More than a competition. 🤝

Being an FEI vet at the World Championships means becoming part of something bigger. Traveling with the team, supporting horses and riders through the excitement and challenges of competition, and building relationships that go far beyond veterinary care.

For Australian team vet Dr. Nathan Anthony from WestVETS Equine Hospital, these teams become an extended family. And when the competition starts, he’s not just watching from the sidelines – he’s right there in the Kiss & Cry, sharing the nerves, the excitement and the emotions of every round. 🙏

At the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026, he shared what makes being a team vet so special – and why these moments stay with you long after the competition is over.

| From Spain to Sweden

What can a two-week externship at an equine clinic abroad teach you? 🌍

For Raquel from Madrid, an externship in Sweden meant experiencing a new clinic, discovering different ways of working and seeing a wide variety of cases – while learning directly from veterinary professionals. 🐴

Her advice to other veterinary students? Take the opportunity and go for it. An externship abroad is not only a chance to expand your veterinary knowledge, but also to experience another culture, practice a language and discover different approaches to equine medicine.

Cervical Spine and Sacroiliac Joint: Ultrasound-Guided Injection Techniques – Practical Course 🐴🩺

Ready to take your ultrasound skills to the next level?

On November 28, 2026, Pferdeklinik Großwallstadt invites equine veterinarians to an intensive practical course focusing on ultrasound-guided injection techniques for the cervical spine and sacroiliac joint.

Led by experienced specialists, the course combines essential theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on training to help participants improve their diagnostic accuracy and develop greater confidence in performing precise injections.

What to expect:

🔹 Ultrasound anatomy of the cervical spine and sacroiliac region
🔹 Identification of normal and abnormal sonographic findings
🔹 Principles of ultrasound-guided injection techniques
🔹 Live demonstrations and practical exercises covering cervical facet joints and sacroiliac joints

During the afternoon, participants will work in two small groups, allowing plenty of time for individual practice and direct exchange with our experts.

It all starts with a clinical examination. 🐎🔎

Before choosing an imaging technique, we first assess the horse as a whole.

A locomotor assessment begins with a detailed history and a thorough physical and musculoskeletal examination, evaluating conformation, posture, areas of pain or restriction, and how the different parts of the body interact. 💪

The horse is then assessed in motion, on straight lines and circles, on different surfaces and at different gaits. Flexion tests and other dynamic assessments may be added when indicated.

Sometimes, the most valuable information appears under saddle. Certain problems only become apparent during ridden exercise or specific movements. Assessing the horse in its usual working conditions can help us understand what the rider feels and how the horse responds to the demands of its discipline. 🐎

Objective gait analysis tools such as Sleip can help quantify asymmetries and monitor changes over time. However, technology remains a tool: every result must be interpreted in the context of the individual horse.

The goal is not simply to identify an asymmetry, but to understand why it is there. 🙏

There’s no single path to becoming an FEI vet. It’s a journey shaped by experience, passion and the opportunities to learn along the way.

Dr. Penny Dow from Scone Equine Hospital in Australia shares her journey to becoming an FEI vet and gives an insight into what it takes to work with horses at the highest level of competition. 🏆

From building experience to taking on responsibility at major international events, being an FEI vet brings together veterinary expertise, a love for horses and a passion for equestrian sport.

What a wonderful few days at BEVA Congress! 🐴

Looking back on an inspiring event filled with great conversations, new connections and a shared passion for equine veterinary medicine.

One of our highlights was meeting so many veterinary students who were eager to learn more about Altano, our international community and the opportunities available to them. Seeing their enthusiasm and hearing their questions reminded us once again how important it is to support the next generation of equine veterinarians.

We were especially happy to make it possible for many students to attend BEVA Congress and experience these valuable days of learning and networking firsthand.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to meet us, and to for the excellent organisation. We loved being part of it and are already looking forward to the next opportunity to connect!

What does it really mean to be a team vet at a World Championship? 👨‍⚕️

At the 2026 World Championships in Aachen, it was about much more than being there when veterinary care was needed. It meant knowing the horses, staying in close contact with riders and grooms, keeping an eye on the details and working together throughout every stage of the competition.

Kristian Ringkjær Andresen, veterinarian at IkeyVet in Denmark, part of the Altano network, and team veterinarian for the Danish Dressage Team, gave us a glimpse into the daily life of a team vet and showed just how important communication, trust and teamwork are when horse and rider compete at the highest level. 🇩🇰

Behind every performance is a whole team working together for the horse. 🐴

40 years of dedication to equine medicine. 🐴🎉

This year, our colleagues at the Tierärztliches Zentrum für Pferde in Kirchheim are celebrating a very special milestone: 40 years of caring for horses, growing as a team and continuously advancing equine medicine.

Looking back at these photos from over the years, one thing becomes clear: a lot may have changed, but the passion for horses and commitment to providing the best possible care have remained at the heart of the clinic throughout its journey.

Since September 2017, Kirchheim has also been part of the Altano community. We are proud to have shared almost a decade of this journey together – learning from each other, exchanging knowledge and shaping the future of equine medicine as one strong network.

On September 19, the team will come together to celebrate this remarkable anniversary. We already want to say: Congratulations to the entire Kirchheim team on 40 years of expertise, dedication and team spirit! 🧡
