Where has my baby gone? Rio is now 15 months old and somehow looks far less like a foal and much more like a leggy, lanky teenager. It doesn’t feel that long ago he was following along beside his mum, and now he’s standing in the paddock looking like he belongs in the grown-up herd.

He’s all legs and growing faster than he quite knows what to do with at the moment, but he’s still very handsome and beautifully put together. I always love this stage, watching them change almost week by week and starting to see glimpses of the horse they’re going to become.

And yes, under that fly mask he’s hiding a very handsome face.

Most horses already know how to canter.
What they don’t understand is the aid.

I’ve just uploaded a new video where I break down how I teach a horse to canter by first teaching the canter cue from the ground, then building a clear bridge into ridden work.

This isn’t about pushing harder or chasing the canter.
It’s about giving the horse clear, consistent aids, so they understand the question and can give you the right answer – instead of wondering whether you want them to trot, trot faster, or actually canter.

I show this first on Rebel so you can clearly see the aids and timing, and then I include footage of genuinely green horses so you can see what early canter really looks like – messy bits and all.

If your horse rushes, scrambles, breaks gait, or feels unsure in the transition, this video will help you see what’s missing.
