Soft ballistic insertion GMP-06
Our company Gared s.r.o. with place of business in Solnice, reports an increased demand for bulletproof vests with added protection against cold weapons even for vests with this protection.
There is a problem with the construction of these vests. Existing standards, both ČSN 39 5360 and US NIJ 0115.00, HOSDB Body Armor Standards 2007, VPAM KDIW, are highly oversized. The result is a protective layer made up of various materials that are up to 25 mm thick. This makes the final product heavy, uncomfortable and especially limiting in motion. This is due to setting the standard. The Czech Standard ČSN 39 5360 which is concerning with stab weapons is divided into three groups TON I, TON II, TON III. But only TON III deals with the guard against knife. Where test weapon of weight 2,6 kg falls from a height of 136 cm with an impact energy of 35 J (Joule) with a tip sanded from both sides at an angle of 15 degrees.
In foreign standards, the stab weapons are classified into one of two different classes depending on the type of threat and further in three levels. The levels of protection are indicated according to stabbing energy which the vest is able to withstand:
- Level 1: the lowest energy level is 24 J excessive test 36 J
- level 2: medium energy level 33 J, excessive test 50 J
- Level 3: high energy level 43 J, excessive test 65 J
Further are two types of protection defined by standards. The class referred as the "Edged Blade" and the second class "spike".
These standards are achieving very disproportionate energy levels ranging from 24 J to 65 J, where pe*******on can occur up to maximum of 7 mm. At the highest energy level, pe*******on up to 20 mm is permissible. Internal human´s injury is not expected in these dimensions. The construction of such vests implies the layering of different materials. To protect against the stab weapons are used ballistic material, titanium sheet, steel rings or steel scrap, polycarbonate and other components. The catch layer is then disproportionately thick and stiff. Even with the development of new modern materials, the situation has not changed much. The vests are still rigid and uncomfortable.
Our company, in co-operation with a foreign firm linked to the French police, has begun to test the possibilities of a new ballistic vest with stab protection or vest against the stab weapons. It was found that a human is able to develop a force on the tip of the blade at a maximum energy of 18 J. The idea of half of the HOSDB standard (2007) was created based on this knowledge. Ballistic vest with stab protection properties was tested on it demand.
Our new soft ballistic insertion which is trade as GMP-06 in protection level IIIA according to NIJ Standard 0101.04 with stab protection properties was certified at the VTÚ, s.p., VTÚVM Slavičín Branch, Accredited Testing Laboratory No. 1128.
The insertion is also testing for the additional ammunition 9 x 19 ACTION 5, 9 mm Makarov Mild Steel Core (MSC) amalgam. 7,62 mm Tokarev FMJ (Ball), including half of stab resistance standard HOSDB (2007), trial knife PB1 with energy Level E1 (9J), energy level E2 (18J), trial needle SP / B energy level 15 J. The result: the ballistic insertion GMP-06 meets the HOSDB (2007) requirement for 9 J and 18 J for blade tests and 15 J for the needle test.
The insertion GMP-06 also meets the requirements for ballistic velocity according to STANAG 2920 V50 500 m / s, detected velocity 594 m / s.
The insertion GMP-06 was further certified for Brenneke caliber 12/70, weight 31.5 grams and velocity 400 m / s. This testing was done based on French police needs.
The thickness of the ballistic insertion including the package is 6,9 mm, the weight is 6,9 kg/m2.
We are able to supply this GMP-06 ballistic insertion to all types of vests which we manufacture. We can also add it to our existing ballistic vest with protection level IIIA according to NIJ STD 0101.04 to increase the stab resistance. Of course, vests without ballistic properties with only stab protection meet the complete requirements of the HOSDB standard (2007). We are preparing separate insertion against the cold weapons for the certification in partial standard requirements at the moment. We are convinced that it will suit both in terms of comfort and safety.
Bulletproof vests with ballistic insertion GMP-06 are successfully delivered both abroad and domestic market, eg. the Czech police.
