🐍 Triple success in Troja: Prague Zoo reports first rearings in three snake species❗
At Prague Zoo, three snake species have reproduced that had not previously bred here. Rough-scaled pythons—originating from north-western Australia and only recently described by science—have hatched for the first time; the clutch produced two young. The remaining species are viviparous: a female Nosy Komba ground boa, a species endemic to the island of Madagascar, gave birth to ten young. The third reptile to be reared for the first time at the zoo is a subterranean inhabitant of Asian sand dunes: a female Tartar sand boa delighted her keepers with four offspring.

Five cheetah cubs at Prague Zoo❗
A litter of cheetahs has been born at Prague Zoo. The five cubs came into the world on 18 June and have not yet passed the critical early period. Despite her inexperience, their mother is providing exemplary care and remains with her offspring in a behind-the-scenes enclosure. If all goes well, visitors will be able to see these rare additions in the second half of August.

🦒 WE HAVE A NEW BREEDING MALE GIRAFFE ‼
Prague Zoo has welcomed an eight-year-old breeding male Nubian giraffe from Safaripark Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands. Our herd is now complete, and you can observe the new male together with the females in the African Savannah enclosure in the upper part of the zoo. The diverse group of animals in this spacious enclosure is complemented by zebras, several species of antelope and ostriches. We look forward to your visit. And don’t forget that throughout the summer holidays, you can benefit from the evening discount: entry after 5 pm costs just CZK 💯 for everyone!

🦅 Bearded vulture from Prague released in Andalusia❗
A young bearded vulture that hatched at Prague Zoo this March has been released into the wild. The juvenile female will soon be soaring above the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia, Spain. Colleagues from the Vulture Conservation Foundation have named her Alhorí, after a local glacial valley. The European population of these birds of prey is threatened with extinction. Thanks only to reintroduction efforts in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and France, Europe’s mountain ranges are now home to no more than 250 individuals.

‼ Caracal kittens born at Prague Zoo 😻
Not in a den box, nor behind the scenes. Two caracal kittens born at Prague Zoo in May came into the world out in the open—and in the rain. The first offspring of a new breeding pair have, however, proved remarkably hardy, and today they can be seen playfully chasing each other in the outdoor enclosure of the Feline and Reptile House, in full view of visitors. They are not making things easy for their mother, a first-time parent, often darting off in opposite directions. In addition to milk, the kittens have already begun to sample the adult diet, enjoying quail, rats and rabbits.

🐍📐 One keeper per metre of snake: Prague Zoo moved and measured its anacondas❗
🐍 Green anacondas at Prague Zoo are once again on view. The trio of snakes has returned from the off-show area to a refurbished exhibit in the Feline and Reptile House. The keepers used the transfer as an opportunity to weigh and measure the snakes. The longest anaconda measures 420 centimetres, while the heaviest weighs 82 kilograms ⚖

A fur seal pup is born at Prague Zoo❗️

Suckling, sleeping and growing stronger: after a full seven years, a Cape fur seal pup is being raised at Prague Zoo. The young male was born to female Daisy on 5 June. Although she began caring for her first offspring immediately, she initially did not have enough milk, so keepers had to introduce supplementary feeding. Now, however, the zoo can be cautiously optimistic: lactation is fully established, and the great-grandson of the legendary Gaston has even begun to play.

🐘➡️ EXCHANGE OF MALE ELEPHANTS ⬅️🐘
The route between Prague and Ostrava saw Asian elephants travelling in both directions last week. Several-tonne males were exchanged between the zoos of the two cities upon the recommendation of the coordinator of the European Ex situ Programme (EEP). Twenty-eight-year-old Maxim arrived in the capital from the Silesian metropolis, while forty-three-year-old Ankhor set off from Prague’s Troja district for Ostrava’s Stromovka. On the morning of 17 June, both elephants entered transport crates, which were loaded onto specialised lorries. By early evening the same day, both animals had been safely unloaded.

🌍🤝 The male Chinese pangolin from Prague Zoo is currently settling into his new home at Frankfurt Zoo. The involvement of another zoological garden in the conservation breeding programme marks an important step towards the preservation of these rare and critically endangered scaly mammals, and we wish our colleagues in Frankfurt much success in their husbandry efforts 🙏
