Some people love them, others are afraid of them or even hate them. How do you feel about macaques? 🐒
Perhaps it is because their behavior, social relationships, and expressions remind us so much of ourselves that macaques are among the best-known primates in the world. They are highly intelligent, form complex social relationships and, just like us, experience joy, fear, and pain and need the company of other members of their group. They have been closely connected with people for centuries and, in different parts of Asia, have become part of local traditions, cultures, and everyday life 🙈🙉🙊
They also play an important role in nature. Among other things, they feed on fruit and disperse the seeds of dozens of plant species, contributing to the regeneration and functioning of entire forest ecosystems 🌳. At the same time, they frequently come into conflict with people, for example when searching for food in fields and plantations.
🐵 The long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis), in particular, is still often perceived as a very common species due to its frequent presence in tourist areas. Yet many people may be surprised to learn that both the long-tailed macaque and the southern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) are now classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. They are just two of the many macaque species whose conservation status varies across Asia, but they clearly demonstrate that even an animal that still appears common in some places may not have a secure future. The southern pig-tailed macaque in the photo was luckier than thousands of others, as it was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Sadly, she had spent her entire life interacting only with humans and had become fully habituated to human contact, which is why the interaction seen in this photo was possible.
Whether macaques inspire admiration or concern, they are an important part of nature and deserve our respect and protection 🙏
