This is an original 1953 photo showing Eddie Arcaro exercising Native Dancer prior to his win in the American Derby.

Doug Dodson is on the other horse. I have another photo of this workout which I will post.

Native Dancer’s normal Jockey Eric Guerin couldn’t ride the Grey Ghost because of a suspension.

Arcaro had previously questioned Native Dancer's abilities and his soundness saying, "All the Dancer has done is go around beating the same horses, and most of the time carrying equal weight."

But he quickly revised his opinion after galloping him for the first time as pictured here.

This is an original 1953 photo of Eddie Arcaro and Native Dancer preparing to workout prior to the American Derby.

The American Derby would be the only race in which Eric Guerin would not ride Native Dancer. Guerin was unable to ride due to his serving a ten day suspension for a foul he committed in the Saratoga Special.

Prior to riding the Grey Ghost, Arcaro did not consider Native Dancer that great a horse. As he felt the Dancer just defeated the same horses again and again. Further Eddie thought the Grey Ghost was not terribly sound.

After winning the American Derby, Eddie Arcaro completely revised his opinion as to Native Dancer’s greatness.
