Meet Edam 🦥

🥺 Edam is one of those rescues who steals everyone’s heart from the very beginning.

🩺 He was found alone on the beach in front of the center, barely moving. He had what appeared to be bites on his hands and feet, and the nails on his right foot were broken. An X-ray revealed that his foot was severely damaged, and Edam needed surgery to have it amputated.

🫶🏻But Edam is a fighter.

🐾 His surgery went well, and he returned to the nursery to continue his recovery. Now, just weeks later, you would never guess how much he has been through. Edam is one of the most active sloths in the nursery. He loves to climb, explore, and move through the trees, and his injury hasn’t stopped him from doing what sloths do best.

✨Watching him climb with so much determination, it’s hard not to imagine the day we see him doing the same thing high up in the wild.

Meet Hades & Jazmin 🦥

🍼 These two baby 2-finger sloths have been under the care of our nursery since they arrived.

🔥 Hades came to us weak and dehydrated, with respiratory issues. Our vets also found larvae on his ear and small cuts between his nails, which they carefully treated.

🌼 Jazmin was found after falling from a tree at the beach. Her mom was still in the canopy but didn’t respond to her cries. When she arrived at our hospital, she was covered in sand, weak, and having trouble breathing. She needed daily nebulization for several weeks to help her recover.

🌿 Both still have a long rehabilitation journey ahead before they can return to the wild. For sloths, this process can take 2 to 3 years.

✨Want to know what it takes to give a sloth a second chance? Check out our blog to learn more about their journey back to the wild.

🥖 You may remember that the baby raccoons we rescue are named after different types of bread. So, meet Arrolladito, whose name means “little rolled bread.”

🦝 A local resident brought him to the center after finding him alone. He was active and alert when he arrived, and he’s been doing well in our care.

🐾 We currently have three other baby raccoons around the same age, living in a larger enclosure where they can climb, explore, and move around more freely. Arrolladito will soon join them.

✨ Baby raccoons grow and learn quickly, and when they are ready, they can usually return to the wild less than a year after arriving at the center.

For now, Arrolladito still has some growing and learning to do, but he’s already off to a great start.

🥹 8 monkeys returned to the wild.

This week, 8 monkeys got their second chance. Some of them had been under our care for almost 3 years.
On September 17, they were moved to La Ceiba, a primary forest and our primary release station, where they could begin adapting to the sounds, smells, weather, and surroundings of the forest. 🌳

🐾 On September 22nd, we went to open the door. Some of them immediately headed for the canopy, while others took a little more time to decide where to go.
By the end, all 8 were in the trees.

🐵 The enclosure's door remained open during their first days so they could explore the forest at their own pace while still having a safe place to return to. But now after a week they decided to stay in the canopy of the trees

✨ Before coming here, they spent time in a large enclosure in our rehabilitation area, with as little human interaction as possible. This space gives them the time and freedom to rebuild the skills they need to live independently in the wild. Thanks to the donation we received in 2023 from we were able to build this space for monkeys.

Now, the forest is theirs again.

🤩 Today we celebrate Tourism Day!

At the JRC, every educational visit has an impact that goes far beyond the hours spent at the center.

🙌 The contribution from our visitors helps us continue our mission: rescuing, rehabilitating, and giving wild animals a second chance. It helps provide the food, medicine, veterinary care, and daily attention they need while they recover.

🌳But your visit also creates another kind of impact. By learning about the animals in our care, the threats they face, and the importance of protecting their natural habitats, visitors take that knowledge with them long after they leave Costa Rica.

🐾 So when you visit JRC, you are not only discovering Costa Rica’s wildlife. You are directly contributing to the work that helps us keep rescuing, caring for, and returning animals to the wild.

✨ Thank you for choosing tourism that supports wildlife and helps our mission continue.

--------------------------------------------------

🔊Have you ever heard a baby spider monkey vocalizing?

🐵 Spider monkeys have a large vocal repertoire. Their calls can include whinnies, barks, squeaks, screams, and more, with different sounds used in different situations.

😅 Little Goku is now over 2 months old, and he is already very vocal, especially in the mornings when it’s time for his first feeding.

🌳Soon, he’ll be moving to Monkey Preschool, where baby monkeys spend most of their time together in a forest enclosure with small trees and ropes that mimic vines for them to climb. There, they begin to become more independent, explore their surroundings, and, most importantly, develop their social skills alongside other young monkeys.

🔊 For now, though, Goku has plenty to say!

🤩 This past Friday, we released another green sea turtle who was a victim of poaching.

🥺 She was brought to us by MINAE on September 7th. She didn’t have a harpoon wound, but she had a large wound on her shell. The people who hunted her had dragged her along the ground, wearing down her shell in the process.

🩺 Our veterinary team cleaned her wounds and kept her under observation, making sure she was regaining her strength before returning to the sea.

🌊 On Friday, she was finally ready to go home.

✨ We want to thank Turtle Rescue Cahuita Rescue , SINAC, and the police for always supporting us with these rescues and helping us give these incredible animals a second chance.

🐢 So far this year, we have rescued four green sea turtles, all victims of poaching. Some arrived with deeper wounds than others, but each one received the care they needed to have a chance to return to the wild

🌿 We’re proud to share our partnership with the Global Rewilding Alliance !!

💚 At the Jaguar Rescue Center, we believe that rescue is only the beginning. Every animal we care for is given the chance to heal, grow, and, whenever possible, return to the wild where they belong. Protecting the places they call home is an essential part of that journey.

✨The Global Rewilding Alliance recently shared our story and how we’re working to give wildlife a second chance while helping protect the ecosystems they depend on.

✨ Have you ever seen a juvenile Keel-billed Toucan and a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan?

Meet Kamon & Tookie, two energetic toucans in our rehabilitation area!

🌈 Kamon, the Keel-billed Toucan, arrived very weak, with badly damaged tail feathers and some mobility issues. Despite this, Kamon stayed active and had a big appetite. Thanks to our veterinary team, Kamon regained his strength and is now doing much better.

😮 Tookie, on the other hand, had been kept as a pet. His wings had been clipped to prevent him from flying, but thankfully, his overall health was good.

🌿 Today, both are being prepared for release. They are vocal, alert, and full of personality. We hope they’ll soon return to the wild!

🧐 Fun fact! Did you know you can tell these two toucan species apart by their bills? Keel-billed Toucans have colorful bills with bright green, blue, orange, and red, while Chestnut-mandibled Toucans have a mostly yellow bill with a distinctive dark upper mandible.

💚 Mila Update

It’s been more than a month since little Mila arrived at the center, a victim of electrocution. As you may remember, she had burns on her foot and face, as well as a severe burn on her tail.

🩺 Since then, Mila has been receiving specialized care, with regular wound treatments and bandage changes. Her foot is now completely healed, and the wound on her tail is almost healed.

🥰 We were worried about how much mobility Mila would have in her tail, but over the last few weeks, we’ve seen such an incredible improvement!

⚡ Sadly, cases like Mila’s come to our center more often than we would like. Babies can become orphans after losing their mothers to electrocution. This is why our Shock Free Zone is so important. Thanks to your support during the Ma Earth campaign, we have purchased materials to insulate 50 transformers.

Together, we’re making the path safer for wildlife.
