Creating a Calm Space for Sensitive Cats 🐱💙
Many cat parents worry about bringing their cats to the veterinary clinic.
Some cats become stressed before they even leave the carrier. Others hide in the corner of the consultation room, hiss, flatten their ears, or tremble with fear.
They're not being "difficult."
They're responding to an unfamiliar environment.
Strong disinfectant smells.Cold stainless-steel tables.Unfamiliar sounds and constant movement.
To us, these may seem like small details. To a cat, they can feel overwhelming.
At Ada's Veterinary Hospital, we prepare the consultation room before your cat arrives.
🐾 We use feline pheromone spray in the consultation room and on our clothing to help create a familiar, reassuring environment from the moment your cat enters.
🐾 Instead of placing cats directly onto a cold metal table, we use soft, non-slip mats so they can feel secure and keep their footing.
🐾 We also minimise unnecessary movement. Cotton balls, clippers, examination tools, treats, and anything else we might need are prepared on a mobile trolley before the appointment begins.
That means fewer people walking in and out, fewer doors opening and closing, and fewer unexpected noises that could increase your cat's stress.
Sometimes, reducing fear isn't about doing more.
It's about removing everything that doesn't need to happen.
Because great veterinary care starts long before the examination begins.
It's about creating a space where your cat feels as safe as possible. ❤️

Cat-Friendly Vaccinations: The Secret to a Stress-Free Visit 🐱💉
Does your cat turn every trip to the vet into a battle?
Hiding, hissing, struggling—and sometimes staying stressed even after returning home?
The truth is, it's usually not because they're "difficult." Cats are highly sensitive animals, and traditional restraint can be overwhelming for them.
At Ada's Veterinary Hospital, we believe that low-stress care is built into every step of the visit.
Here's one of our favourite vaccination techniques:
Before the injection, we spread a little lickable treat onto a textured silicone lick mat. While the kitten is happily enjoying a snack, the vaccination is often completed before they even notice.
The different surface textures also provide gentle sensory enrichment, keeping curious minds engaged. After the injection, they can continue licking their treat, helping them stay relaxed and end the visit on a positive note.
Sometimes, the best veterinary medicine isn't about holding tighter—it's about giving cats something better to focus on.
If you're in Shanghai and looking for a calmer veterinary experience for your cat, we'd love to welcome you.
🐾 Quiet, cat-friendly consultation rooms🐾 Low-stress, feline-focused handling🐾 A gentler experience for both cats and their families
Because great veterinary care isn't just about treating illness—it's about protecting your cat's emotional wellbeing, too. ❤️

🌧️ Rainy season = skin problem season for pets.

Warm, humid weather creates the perfect environment for bacteria, fungi, and parasites to thrive. During this time of year, we often see a noticeable increase in skin conditions in both dogs and cats.

Keep an eye out for these common problems:
🔴 Moist dermatitis (hot spots)
🔴 Ringworm (dermatophytosis)
🔴 Interdigital dermatitis (inflamed paws)
🔴 Fleas, ticks, ear mites, and other parasites

Here are a few simple ways to help protect your pet:

🥩 Feed a consistent, high-quality diet. For pets with suspected food sensitivities, a single-protein diet may be recommended by your veterinarian.

💨 Keep your home dry. Use a dehumidifier if needed, and regularly wash and thoroughly dry bedding to reduce fungal growth and discourage parasites.

🛁 Bathe when appropriate, and if your veterinarian recommends a medicated shampoo, follow the treatment plan carefully. Always dry the coat completely—including between the toes—after bathing.

🪲 Stay up to date with year-round parasite prevention to protect against fleas, ticks, and mites.

🐶🐱 If your pet is scratching excessively, losing hair, licking their paws, developing skin redness, or showing signs of limping, don’t wait. Early treatment is often simpler, more effective, and much more comfortable for your pet.

Healthy skin starts with prevention—and a little extra care during the rainy season can make a big difference. ❤️

Not Every Dog Is Born Knowing How to Swim 🐾

Many people assume that all dogs are natural swimmers, but that’s not always true.

Recently, we treated a dog who developed hypothermia after being introduced to swimming too quickly. The owner was eager to help their dog enjoy the water, but the pace was simply too much, too soon.

If it’s your dog’s first time around water, take it slowly:

💦 Start by letting them watch other dogs play in the water from a safe distance. Dogs often learn through observation and social interaction.

🦺 Always use a properly fitted life jacket, especially for beginners.

🌊 Begin in shallow water and allow your dog to explore at their own pace rather than forcing them to swim.

Some breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Border Collies, are often more comfortable around water. However, every dog is an individual, and even dogs of the same breed can have very different preferences and confidence levels.

The goal isn’t to make every dog love swimming.

The goal is to help them feel safe, comfortable, and confident.

Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is respect the pace our dogs choose for themselves. ❤️

☀️ As summer arrives, many pet parents think the best way to help their dogs stay cool is to shave off all their fur. Surprisingly, that can do more harm than good!

A dog’s coat does much more than keep them warm:

🐶 Helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays
🐶 Reduces the risk of sunburn
🐶 Provides insulation against both heat and cold
🐶 Offers protection from insect bites
🐶 Helps cushion minor bumps and scratches

For most dogs, completely shaving the coat can actually increase the risk of sun damage and skin irritation.

Veterinarians generally recommend leaving around 2–3 cm of coat length when trimming, depending on the breed and coat type.

Instead of shaving everything off, regular brushing is often the best summer grooming strategy. Removing loose undercoat and dead hair helps improve airflow through the coat and supports natural temperature regulation.

Every coat has a purpose — sometimes, less is not more. ❤️

After talking about common heatstroke myths in our last post, here’s a real case of a Samoyed who suffered heatstroke after delayed treatment due to incorrect first aid.

Heatstroke in dogs can range from:
⚠️ Mild: excessive panting and restlessness
⚠️ Moderate: weakness and difficulty walking
⚠️ Severe: collapse, shock, or unconsciousness

Every stage should be taken seriously.

To help prevent heatstroke:
💧 Always provide fresh water
☀️ Avoid walks during the hottest hours of the day
🚗 Never leave your dog in a parked car whenever possible
🏠 Keep indoor spaces cool and well ventilated

Summer can be challenging for our furry family members. Stay alert, stay prepared, and help keep them safe throughout the season. 🐾

🥵 Hot weather can be surprisingly dangerous for dogs!

Even when you feel comfortable, your dog may still be at risk of heatstroke.

Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They mainly cool themselves by panting and through their paw pads, which makes it much harder for them to regulate body temperature in hot weather. 😓

That means even a shaded area can become dangerous if it’s hot, humid, and poorly ventilated.

⚠️ Dogs at higher risk include:
• Flat-faced breeds (French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Shih Tzus)
• Senior dogs
• Puppies
• Overweight dogs

Another important thing to remember:
We experience the temperature higher above the ground, but dogs are much closer to hot pavement and sun-heated surfaces. The ground can stay extremely hot even when the air feels comfortable to us.

Understanding why heatstroke happens is the first step in preventing it. ❤️

✨ In our next post, we’ll talk about the warning signs of heatstroke and how to keep your dog safe during hot weather.

Stay tuned!

⚠️ Emergency Reminder | Foreign Body Ingestion Cases Are Increasing Recently!

This little dog recently swallowed a corn cob ⚠️
Many pet owners think corn cobs are “soft” and harmless — but they are actually extremely dangerous for dogs.

Corn cobs absorb water, contain tough fibers, and cannot be digested properly.
They can easily cause:
❗ Intestinal blockage
❗ Vomiting
❗ Loss of appetite
❗ Even intestinal perforation in severe cases

Every time we perform a foreign body surgery, it’s heartbreaking.
The dog suffers physically, and owners often go through emotional stress and unexpected medical expenses 😔

🧩 Common dangerous household items for dogs include:
• Corn cobs
• Plastic bags
• Rubber bands
• Needles & thread
• Foam materials
• Small toys
• Bone fragments

⚠️ Important reminder:
If you have dogs at home, please use trash bins with secure lids.
Searching through garbage bins is one of the most common causes of accidental foreign body ingestion.

Wishing every furry family member a safe, healthy, and trouble-free life ✨

As the weather gets hotter 🌞, ticks are becoming much more active in grassy outdoor areas!

When taking your furry friends outside to play, they can easily become targets for ticks without you noticing 🕷️
Ticks attach firmly to the skin to feed on blood and may transmit serious diseases, so they should never be taken lightly ⚠️

❗ If you find a tick on your pet, do not pull it out by force.
Improper removal may leave mouthparts behind or increase infection risk. It’s safest to seek professional veterinary help.

To help protect your pets this summer:
✅ Avoid dense grass and bushes when possible
✅ Keep up with regular flea & tick prevention
✅ After outdoor activities, carefully check areas like:
• Behind the ears
• Armpits
• Between the toes

Wishing every furry family member a safe, healthy, and comfortable summer 🐱🐶✨
