NEW TEAM MEMBERS - Welcome to our team!
We are very happy to introduce three new team members who joined us in August/September and bring professionalism, empathy and enthusiasm to our practice:
* Denise, an experienced TPA and vocational trainer, brings many years of valuable experience from everyday practice as well as from working with zoo and exotic animals.
* Ella has started her three-year apprenticeship to become a vettech/TPA with us. We are excited to support her on this important journey.
*Romy will spend the next year with us as an intern, gaining practical experience and preparing for her future TPA apprenticeship.
We are delighted to have these three ladies on board. Their commitment and support help us continue to provide high-quality veterinary care for our dear patients, your pets ❤️ your (expanded) team of Kleintierpraxis Kreis 2

NEW APPRENTiCE ELLA - We are delighted to welcome Ella to our practice team and second apprentice alongside Otilija Wanger!
She is beginning her 3 year apprenticeship as a Veterinary Practice Assistant (TPA EFZ/Vettech) and will complete her practical training at our small animal practice.
Our apprentice Otilija is already one big step ahead: she has just started her third and final year of training. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to support two future Veterinary Practice Assistants on their journey towards completing their professional qualifications.
This varied and demanding apprenticeship combines practical training at an authorised veterinary practice in the Canton of Zurich with vocational school education and supplementary intercompany training courses. Step by step, our apprentices acquire the professional knowledge and practical skills required for this diverse and rewarding career.
Dear Ella, we wish you a great start, lots of enjoyment and success throughout your apprenticeship, and many exciting and enriching experiences at our practice - with our team, our pet owners and, of course, the many different animal patients we care for 😍

SUMMER RiSKS FOR YOUR DOG -
1. Awns - nasty plant parts with barbs! We did find quite a lot of them so far this summer! They get stuck on ears, eyes, paws and anywhere in the skin. Control if excessive licking, redishness, swelling and/or fistulas occur! Due to their barbs they only know one direction deep into to the tissue, causing damage, pain & inflammation.
2. Water Intoxication - does not mean the water your dog plays in, swims or drinks from is toxic but by playing too long & intense in/with water (not saltwater) or even with hoses and ingesting it. Red blood cells as well as others & brain cells might swell leading to neurological issues, seizures, or even death.
3. Insect bites - be prepared to contact a vet if swelling of the head and especially the mouth/tongue shortly after the sting occur and/or your pet starts to become very apathic. If heavy breathing is detected it is assessed as an emergency! Control the area, try to get the sting out, cool the area and contact your vet immediately.
4. Water tail - muscle sprain that is typically causing a dog’s tail to go limp, hanging straight down or sticking out horizontally before dropping. Causes like prolonged swimming, intense exercise, or being crated for long periods can lead to it. Quite common in sporting breeds and often triggered by exposure to cold or wet water.
5. Heat intolerance, stroke - after exposure to sun, excersise in heat or just warm weather, especially ill, senior pets and brachycephalic dogs tend to react very severe. Possibly nausea, vomiting, excessive panting, lethargy, circulation issues due to overheating occur… prophylactics are always better than any therapy in these cases.
6. Food intoxications, check for grapes, avocado, garlic, chocolate, plants such as Lillys and Oleander.
7. barbecue risks include ingested bones, wooden sticks, corn on the cob, even burns on skin…
8. Fireworks (check Swiss national day, 1st of August) can be lit anytime - check & secure your pets, contact us for anxiety relief options… enjoy a happy, relaxed summer ☀️ with your pets, your team Kleintierpraxis Kreis 2

SPRiNG HAZARDS FOR YOUR PETS - Spring brings increased risks to pets from toxic plants 🌷, parasites, household hazards like fertilizers, snail baits and chocolate 🍫(Easter weekend 🐣).
Warmer weather increases allergic reactions, “high-rise syndrome” from open windows and drinking from still small waters/ponds can increase the risk of leptospirosis infections (check your pets vaccines ‼️).
• Toxic Spring Plants: Lilies (deadly to cats), daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, rhododendrons, and azaleas can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, or heart/kidney failure if ingested.
• Parasites : As temperatures rise, fleas, ticks, and worms become active. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, and they should be checked for after every walk.
• Garden Products: Fertilizer, insecticides, and herbicides are often toxic.
• Slug/snail pellets contain Metaldehyd and are highly toxic.
• Allergies: Pets can suffer from environmental allergies, causing itchy & inflamed skin, sneezing, and paw-biting.
• Open Windows: Secure all screens to prevent falls, particularly for cats (“high-rise syndrome”).
• Chocolate/Easter treats: Dangerous to dogs and cats
• Bee/Wasp Stings: Can cause swelling and severe allergic reactions.
• Grass Seeds: These can enter a pet’s ear or fur, causing pain and matting.
• Shedding: as the weather warms up, pets begin to shed their thicker winter fur in exchange for a lighter summer coat. Brush your pets regularly to avoid hair matting & itchiness.
• The longer daylight hours affect hormone levels and brain signals in animals, leading to changes in behaviour. Combined with increased outdoor stimulation, this can lead to heightened excitement or activity in your pets… ☀️ enjoy a safe springtime with your family & pets in besutiful awaking nature & contact us for prophylactics & vaccine control 🌸 your team

ZUKUNFTSTAG 2025 - “Future Day” is held once a year in November when girls and boys discover the diversity of the professional world and thereby expand their future prospects.
Future Day also strengthens the courage and self-confidence of young people to not focus on stereotypical role models, but rather on their own interests and talents.
We had 6 interested and enthusiastic girls spending half a day in our clinic, attending medical appointments for pets, watched anesthesia and surgery going on and and got involved in practical training in veterinary-medical skills. Our patient “Teddy” was a pro due to regular medical training and very well behaved.
All his medical issues and far beyond were treated with excellent tender love and care 😻
Note: we do encourage boys to consider a job in the veterinary field, although our profession has changed from being male dominated to an almost female rouled job industry it is as always the combination that makes the dream work best...❤️ we like to thank all the involved including our vettech apprentices Otilija & Aliya for the great assistance on that special day 🙏

AUTUMNAL HAZARDS FOR PETS 🍁 - check out
1. Chestnut 🌰 contain poison which can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain,
Ingestion can also lead to potentially fatal intestinal blockages.
2. Acorns 🍁contain a chemical that’s toxic to dogs and ingestion can cause liver and kidney damage. Affected dogs will show signs that include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and abdominal pain.
3. Fallen leaves 🍂 left long enough will eventually turn to leaf mould and, like any decomposing organic matter, may contain dangerous mycotoxins,
4. Rotten/fallen fruit such as apples, pears and plums eventually ferments naturally on the ground and so may contain poisonous ethanol 🍐
5. Avoid grapes - contact your veterinary clinic if ingested by your dog, just some berries can cause serious kidney problems 🍇
6. Ensure your dog has up to date flea treatment administered as fleas can thrive indoors when we start to heat our homes in autumn ‼️
7. Keep halloween treats and sweets out of reach for your pets 🎃
8. Harvest mites, these tiny insects climb up long grass, bushes and trees waiting to sink their fangs into something warm-blooded. Signs of infestation can include skin inflammation and scratching.
9. Some wild mushrooms 🍄 are highly toxic and if swallowed can cause kidney and liver failure. Try and keep your dog away from all wild varieties.
10. Darker nights can reduce your dog’s and your ability to be seen 💡Ensure you and your dog are visible with reflective leads, collars and vests. Always take your phone with you for extra lights or emergency calls…
11. Rock salt or grit on the roads can cause your dog to become dehydrated or in serious cases, cause liver failure if they lick it from their paws. Ensure you wipe away any rock salt after you have taken them on a walk.
12. Antifreeze - ❄️ (ethylene glycol) is sweet-tasting and palatable, but even a small quantity can cause severe kidney damage. Dogs who have ingested antifreeze may vomit, have seizures or have difficulty breathing.
We wish you a happy, colourful, sunny, foggy, wrapped in comfy blankets autumn 🍂 🍁
