The fastest way to discover how much you’re really reading your dog? Handle one you’ve never worked before.

One of the things I love about mantrailing is working with dogs I don’t know.

No expectations. No assumptions. Just observing, listening, and learning from the dog in front of me.

This amazing Border Terrier girl was my teammate during ( thanks to Rhi & Chris) the Marwell Mantrailing Retreat in the UK this May, and I loved every minute of it.

Every dog has something new to teach us. This little superstar certainly did.

Ever wondered why I keep telling you to stop and give your dog space on the trail?

If you’ve ever trailed with me, you’ve probably heard me say: “Stop there. Give them space. Don’t follow immediately.”

The way we position ourselves on a trail can have a huge impact on how our dogs work. Many dogs are sensitive to our body language, even when we don’t realise we’re communicating.

Imagine your dog arriving at a junction. If we’re right behind them, we can accidentally push them into a direction with our movement. And when we already know where the trail goes, it’s surprisingly easy to unconsciously tell our dog, “It’s this way!” with our body.

By giving our dogs a little more space, we allow them to work more independently, make their own decisions, and solve the scent puzzle without unnecessary pressure from us.

Of course, we’re all human. We all step in the wrong place, block a turn, or influence our dogs without meaning to. That’s part of learning.

So be aware of your positioning, but don’t beat yourself up over the occasional mistake. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s giving your dog the best opportunity to show you what they know.

There are trails where the environment takes over and all the planning goes out the window — and that’s okay too.

We’re not chasing perfection. We adapt, adjust, observe, and interpret what our dogs are telling us.

Today was one of those sessions.

What looked like a simple forest area turned into a surprisingly complex scent picture that challenged every team. There was so much going on in the environment that not everything could be easily explained, and that’s part of the beauty of mantrailing.

These are the days that ask for a little more patience, a little more trust, and a little more curiosity. They remind us to work with our dogs rather than against them, and to stay open to the fact that there is still so much we don’t know about how scent behaves. The funny thing is that while we are still trying to understand it, our dogs often know far more than we do. Sometimes the best thing we can do is trust their nose and follow along.

So enjoy the easy trails, but enjoy the difficult ones too. They often teach us the most.

And remember: we’re doing this for fun… nobody is actually missing for real. 😉

What a fantastic location we got to trail in today!

A former rehabilitation centre and elderly home opened its doors for us, giving teams the chance to experience the joy, challenge, and pure quirkiness of indoor trailing.

And wow… this place was a maze. Endless floors, hidden corners, unusual rooms, and some truly creative scent pictures that really challenged both dogs and handlers to slow down, observe, and trust the process.

I had the pleasure of instructing my teams and trailing with Camilla myself, guided by Melanie from Scent Detectives.

Indoor trailing has such a different feel to it — scent movement, staircases, closed spaces, old odours, humans everywhere… and the dogs absolutely rose to the occasion.

Safe to say, everyone left with a huge smile on their face.

A massive thank you to Melanie for organising and making this incredible location possible for us.

To escape the heat, Team Spyke and Team Chaya worked on some scent pool exercises surrounded by plenty of natural distractions.
For both dogs, this type of exercise was about much more than simply “finding the person” — it was about working through distractions, building confidence, making independent decisions, and learning to move through the environment in a calmer, more thoughtful way.

One of my favourite things about mantrailing is watching dogs grow in confidence while still being allowed to work at their own pace and within their comfort zone.

Curious to try mantrailing with your dog? Feel free to send me a message to join an introduction session.

Sadly, retreat day 3 is done and over… and what a way to finish it.

Laughter, brilliant trails, new challenges, a costume race, finding the missing capybara and so many moments that made this retreat unforgettable.

I had the absolute best time meeting wonderful people who welcomed me with open arms, sharing lunches and good food, trailing in beautiful locations, learning new components, handling an unfamiliar dog and getting the opportunity to learn from so many different teams and perspectives along the way.

These few days were such a special mix of fun, connection, trailing and simply enjoying being around people who love this as much as I do. I’m really going to miss it.

Huge thank you again to Danielle & Rhi for running it and Chris for capturing so many of these moments with his camera.

Already looking forward to returning next year !
