Ever wonder why Bush Order is all the way out in Kam Lake? Here’s the honest answer.
When Marie and I started this whole thing, the plan was a market garden. Grow good food for Yellowknife, that’s it. Turns out vegetables do not pay commercial property rent very well. Who knew. (Everyone. Everyone knew.)
So we have faced on the wholesale aspect of the bakery. Then we realized selling bread directly to you lovely is more beneficial to the business, so we opened the Farm Store. To entice more traffic we focused on bringing in other local food producers too. Then we got really into cheese and you know how that is going.
Then Elliott came along, and he’s a full-time job all on his own. So the garden plans change year over year. Recently we have focus on turning some of it into a food forest: apple trees, saskatoons, raspberries, even some dwarf cherries. Some years it’ll just be cover crops, and that’s fine. We’re in this for the long haul.
So come out and see us at the Farm Store, 180 Enterprise Drive in Kam Lake. If you’re downtown, The Pantry is inside Yellowknife Books. And if you’ve got a cheese question, please ask. We will happily talk your ear off.
Oh, and one more thing. Marie’s in school to become a nurse. Next time you see her, say “Go, Marie!” She’s going to hate that I wrote this.
