I saw a post recently made by a pretty well known mustang trainer. It made me reflect on my horse training journey and how my experience has shaped the way I do things now.
It talked about when they first started doing mustangs, they did everything at liberty, from grooming to picking up hooves and how silly and dangerous that was in hindsight.
They really made it sound like doing it all at liberty was dangerous.
I think the opposite.
The more experience I get, the more I feel comfortable in my abilities to get horse from point A to point B without any restraints.
I am confident in my abilities & knowledge of when a horse is ready to do certain things.
Timing & release are key factors you need to master to stay safe during sessions.
Knock on wood, I hardly ever get into any accidents. I don't really get bitten, kicked, struck etc.
I feel like doing things when a horse is not ready is what leads to dangerous situations and forcing a horse into compliance before it feels safe with humans is what causes most mishaps.
Maybe you'll think I am crazy, but I can touch my horses all over & pick up their hooves before they even get a halter and a leadrope. But I'm happy being the crazy lady, because I love doing things this way 😜💗
